BASEBALL BEAT THIS IS BAD?

Byline: Heather Gripp Staff Writer

Chatsworth is a win away from playing in its third City final in four years. The Chancellors have lost only five games this season. And this a team whose season many were calling disastrous not long ago.

``I was talking to Noun 1. talking to - a lengthy rebuke; "a good lecture was my father's idea of discipline"; "the teacher gave him a talking to"
lecture, speech

rebuke, reprehension, reprimand, reproof, reproval - an act or expression of criticism and censure; "he had to
someone recently and he said, 'Coach, you had a rough season,' '' Chatsworth coach Tom Meusborn said. ``And this is at the end of the regular season when we've won 23 of 28 games. I'm saying, 'We win 23 games and that's a bad season?' I think some teams would definitely love to have a season like that. I take that as a compliment. That shows what kind of standards have been set for us. I tell the guys that's a compliment.''

The perception of trouble stemmed from the Chancellors going from being No. 1 in the nation to not even being in the national polls. The defending City champs endured a streak in which they lost three of four games en route to finishing third in the West Valley League for the first time in more than a decade.

In today's semifinal against Cleveland of Reseda, Chatsworth (25-5) faces a team that has beaten them three times this season, but the Chancellors would rather focus on the way they've regrouped and improved concentration during the postseason.

``We're really not thinking about that in terms of what happened in the past,'' said Meusborn, whose sixth-seeded team is coming off an upset of No. 3 El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:

of Woodland Hills, which had defeated Chatsworth during league.

VALLEY MISSION REMATCH

Sylmar swept San Fernando San Fernando, city, Argentina

during Valley Mission League play, but San Fernando gets one more try at the Spartans when the league rivals meet in today's City semifinal at Birmingham High. All along, San Fernando coach Armando Gomez said he liked his team's chances if the No. 12 Tigers could get past Birmingham of Lake Balboa in the first round. San Fernando (16-13-1) upset the No. 5 Patriots and Gomez maintains his optimism heading into today's game against No. 1 Sylmar (26-4).

``We played 'em all year,'' Gomez said. ``Two of the three games we gave them. ... We're playing nice and relaxed now. It's tough to beat a team four times in a row, so we'll see.

``I wish it'd been like this all season, but in the playoff is when it counts.''

 in Long Beach.

Grace Brethren won three consecutive titles from 1998-2000, but when most of the starters from those teams graduated, the Lancers failed to reach the Division VI final last season. This year's team appeared to be continuing the slide as Grace Brethren finished second in a Heritage League race it is used to winning. Entering playoffs unseeded was an unfamiliar situation, but the Lancers (16-9) are in a groove. To get to the final, Grace Brethren has upset four league champions, including fourth-seeded La Verne La Verne (lə vûrn), city (1990 pop. 30,897), Los Angeles co., S Calif., a suburb of Los Angeles; inc. 1906. La Verne, which began as a citrus-processing center, now has varied manufacturing, including electronic components, apparel, hand  Lutheran in the quarterfinals and No. 1 Bloomington Christian in Tuesday's semifinals.

Standing in the way of another championship is unseeded Thacher, which has upset the division's No. 2 and No. 3 seeds and beat Grace Brethren 5-4 during the regular season.

The matchup is believed to be the first all-Ventura County final.
