BASEBALL BEAT THE RIGHT NUMBER.

Byline: Heather Gripp Staff Writer

Westlake's Tyler Adamczyk is such a big Nolan Ryan
Lynn Nolan Ryan, Jr. (born January 31, 1947) is a former American right-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball who played in a major league record 27 seasons for the New York Mets, California Angels, Houston Astros, and Texas Rangers, from to .

Adamczyk also likes to wear Ryan's No. 34. But Westlake did not have a uniform with that number. Adamczyk opted for No. 17 the past two years since it is half of 34. The Warriors finally got Adamczyk his No. 34 this year for his senior season. It was the least they could do to pay back the Cal-bound right-hander for being one of the region's top pitchers and hitters.

``I graduated from half of 34 to 34,'' Adamczyk said.

Brett Wexler epitomizes Calabasas' renewed focus on defense. Although he is a capable hitter, the Coyotes often use him only on defense. Wexler has made just one error and is helping Calabasas average at least a double play a game after turning just five all of last season.

``This is a kid who has magic in his glove and dirt on his uniform,'' Coyotes coach Rick Nathanson said. ``He gives us something we haven't had in four years. ... If you're strong up the middle, you're going to win games.''

Unlike last year's error-prone team, the Coyotes have allowed more than six runs only once and frequently commit fewer than two errors a game.

``The last two years, we were pretty much a clinic on how not to defend in baseball,'' Nathanson said. ``I told the guys this year, `I don't care

    HE CAN'T DO EVERYTHING

It may seem as if Chaminade of West Hills left-hander Bobby Paschal can do it all, but Eagles coach Scott Drootin was happy to prove otherwise. Drootin beat Paschal and teammate Erik Johnson

    LEAGUE UPDATES

    FOOTHILL

Canyon of Canyon Country has a chance today to become the first team since Burroughs of Burbank in 1997 to take a season series from Hart of Newhall. Junior Jake Coash (7-0) and the second-place Cowboys already achieved one first by beating the Indians 4-2 on Tuesday, making them the first team in 19 games this season to beat Division II's top-ranked team. The Canyon senior left-hander, who has wins against Hart the past two years, gets the start against Indians senior right-hander Phil Tognetti.

``It's nice to beat Hart, but we expect to win every game. It doesn't matter who we play,'' said Cowboys catcher Josh Lagrotta, noting his team gained confidence from a strong showing at last week's Baldwin Park Baldwin Park, city (1990 pop. 69,330), Los Angeles co., S Calif., a suburb of Los Angeles, in the fertile San Gabriel valley; settled 1870, inc. 1956. If Highland of Palmdale could skip the first inning, the Bulldogs might be one of the league's best teams. ``We're great once we get past the first inning,'' Highland coach Todd Zucker said. ``I joke that most teams have a closer, I need an opener, someone to pitch the first inning and get three outs.''

Even with their struggles early in games, the Bulldogs have rebounded from a 4-7 start and could reach .500 with a win today against Littlerock.

Westlake is solidifying its hold on first and the race for the league's final two playoff spots quickly is tightening. Agoura is the year's surprise team. The Chargers are in second place instead of their usual spot in last. TRI-VALLEY

St. Bonaventure of Ventura and Fillmore are the league leaders, but Oak Park is close. To remain in contention, the Eagles need consistency.

``We've played well at times and at other times we just don't play to our potential,'' Oak Park coach Eric Pryor said. ``If we can play the way we're capable of, we'll be in the hunt.''

    SEVEN-DAY OUTLOOK

    Game of the week

Kennedy at San Fernando, Monday, 3 p.m.: Defending City champion Kennedy of Granada Hills entered the season as the team to beat, but San Fernando is the one in first place in Valley Mission League play. San Fernando is undefeated in league, and two wins against the second-place Cougars essentially would secure the title. The teams meet again Wednesday at Kennedy.

    Potential upset

Lancaster and Highland of Palmdale are on opposite ends of the spectrum in the Golden League, but the first-place Eagles shouldn't overlook Highland when the teams meet twice next week. The Bulldogs lost by just one in their previous meeting and have since improved their confidence and fundamentals. Plus, Highland's first-year coach Todd Zucker knows Lancaster's tendencies better than most since he used to coach at Lancaster.

    Bound to happen

Justin Segal will dominate when he starts for Calabasas today against Nordhoff of Ojai, maintaining the Coyotes' perfect record in the Frontier League. Segal (4-1, 1.56 ERA, two saves and 46 strikeouts in 40 1/3 innings) earned the win against second-place Nordhoff during the first round of league, but a leg cramp prevented him from completing the game. He would love to go the distance this time to add to the list of quality teams he has mastered. The right-hander's only loss is to highly ranked Palm Desert.
