BASEBALL BEAT THE FANTASTIC FOUR.

Byline: Heather Gripp Staff Writer

Saugus has a capable bullpen. At least that's what the Centurions think. They wouldn't know for sure, though, since their four starters have done so well that relief is rarely needed.

``Those four have really been fantastic,'' Saugus coach Casey Burrill said of starters Casey Benesch, Kyle Love, Chris Alheim and Scott Pellett. ``They've been throwing well and throwing long. There is a bullpen there, they just haven't been used. They've been throwing bullpens and keeping their arms in shape, but as for how they'd do in games, we haven't had to go to them, so I can't tell you for sure.''

Benesch is 1-2 in league play but has been effective enough to gain attention from scouts. He is receiving significant interest from Loyola Marymount. Both he and Love average more than seven strikeouts a game.

Even the No. 4 starter, Pellett, was solid in Monday's game against a strong Glendora lineup. He allowed five hits and two earned runs in the 3-0 loss.

``We've been getting great pitching performances,'' Burrill said. ``But the offense hasn't been doing much.''

The pitchers have helped the Centurions remain in contention in the Foothill League a year after finishing fifth in the six-team race. Saugus is tied for second with Canyon entering next week's series against Valencia.

A GOOD LERNER

Having a close family friend who is a former major-league catcher enabled Montclair Prep's Landon Lerner to spend years absorbing information about his dream career.

Lerner, a junior at the Van Nuys school, started training with former Dodgers catcher Steve Yeager

as an 11-year-old. They focused strictly on catching for years, although lessons now include hitting.

``Everything about catching that I know, I learned from him,'' Lerner said. ``He's taught me a lot about actual catching, but he's also taught me to focus your enthusiasm, your anger, your nervousness or whatever it is and turn it into something positive on the field.''

Lerner earned All-Delphic League honors as a sophomore and is likely to receive several more honors before his career is over. The honors student An honors student is a student in elementary, middle, or high school recognized for achieving high grades.

is attracting attention from a variety of colleges.

``He blocks balls as well as anyone I've seen,'' Montclair Prep coach Mark Saracino said. ``And he has been throwing out runners on a consistent basis. Runners on first and third, it doesn't really matter, we let him throw through.''

In a recent game, Lerner threw out three runners and picked one off first base. He does the same thing in practice.

``I tell him at times just go easy, it's not the time to get hurt,'' Saracino said. ``But he's always going hard.''

``Teams see us and they go, `This doesn't look like a real intimidating team,' '' said Royal coach Dan Maye, whose team is ranked eighth in Division II.

The Highlanders are loaded with seniors but are one of the shortest groups Maye has had. At 6-foot-6, 245 pounds, senior right-hander Dan Fischer towers over his teammates. Only two other regulars are at least 6-foot. The tallest infielder is senior shortstop Chris Dusablon.

``He says he's 5-10, but that's pushing it,'' Maye said.

Instead of the power hitting it counted on in recent years with players such as Brian Lipman - the region's co-leader in career home runs - Royal is relying more on solid defense, pitching and base hits. Potential hero: Lucio Tapia's three-run home run in Birmingham's victory over San Fernando on Tuesday was just his second of the season. it was also his second in a week. After a slow start, Tapia's bat is heating up, making him a prime candidate to lead the Patriots' quest to remain in contention in the West Valley League when they face Granada Hills twice next week.

Potential upset: No one has been able to beat Canyon junior Jake Coash (5-0) this season. However, now comes what might be the left-hander's biggest challenge: Hart, which hasn't lost a league game this year. Coash, who averages more than 10 strikeouts, is scheduled to start against the Indians on Tuesday.
