BASEBALL BEAT TAFT'S TURNAROUND.Byline: Heather Gripp Staff Writer Things were so bad at Taft of Woodland Hills by the end of last season the Toreadors had to use their freshman team manager in a game. Taft's talent pool isn't much deeper this year, but the Toreadors are making the most of what they've got. The rebuilding reached a high point Monday when Taft upset defending City Section champion Cleveland of Reseda 3-2 for the Toreadors' first West Valley League victory since 1999. ``They were very pleased,'' Taft coach Ed Gunny said. ``It's hard to walk out against a Chatsworth or El Camino when you haven't won any games. ... ``These kids are a little sheepish sheep·ish adj. 1. For one day they can hold their head high.'' But the victory over Cleveland hasn't been the only positive. Monday's victory was the third of the year for a program that went 2-19-1 last season. Two of Taft's most promising players transferred after last season, but those who remain are dedicated and many are seniors determined to end their career on a better note. The Cavaliers, who started 6-0, were swept by Birmingham last week and lost their fifth in a row Monday against Taft of Woodland Hills. Before counting Cleveland out, though, remember last year's Cavaliers started league 0-4 but went on to win the City title. A team meeting after the Taft loss helped Cleveland re-focus and defeat Quartz Hill 10-0 on Wednesday. ``It's hard to win games when you're only getting two or three hits a game,'' said Cleveland coach Joe Cascione, whose team had a combined eight hits in the five losses. ``Our pitching all year has been fabulous, but we haven't been hitting.''
