BASEBALL BEAT PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT.

Byline: Heather Gripp Staff Writer

Cleveland of Reseda's upset of Westlake had the Cavaliers back at practice this week ready to work harder than ever. Seeing what their prior hard work had produced made them hungry for more. After all, this is a team that went 14-15 last season and wasn't supposed to be able to compete with top opponents such as the Warriors, who were ranked nationally in the preseason.

However, Saturday's 4-3 victory improved Cleveland to 4-1. The Cavaliers followed it up Tuesday with a 15-1 victory over Reseda.

``Our practices have been great,'' Cleveland coach Joe Cascione said. ``They work so hard in practice. They're extremely dedicated. They've got a great work ethic work ethic

The biggest payoff from practices has been solid defense. Cleveland has made just two errors through six games.

WELL-KNOWN RIVALS

Casey Burrill is in his first season as Saugus' coach, but already he is more familiar with the Foothill League than many. He has ties to two of the league's top contenders since he played at Hart of Newhall and spent the past few years as an assistant at Valencia.

Burrill will face many of the players he used to coach when Saugus meets Valencia in Friday's league opener.

``We can't wait,'' Burrill said. ``We're looking forward to that.''

Facing his old teams isn't the only thing about which Burrill is excited. He has given a fresh start to a program that won just three league games last season. The Centurions have a renovated field and an new outlook thanks to a lineup full of seniors, as well as young players such as pitcher Chris Ahlheim and shortstop Josh Fogel.

``This is a tough league,'' Burrill said. ``But we think we have a chance to make playoffs.''

After spoiling Palmdale's chances of reaching the Daily News Invitational final Friday by becoming the first team this season to beat the Falcons, Thousand Oaks defeated Van Nuys 20-0 Saturday behind the hitting of Matt Brown, Damian Fante, Chad Lundahl and Kevin Grizard for their third consecutive victory. ... Injuries to Westlake pitchers Chris White and Justin Blaine could make for a tighter league race than expected. Many teams have blamed early sloppy play on the recent rain that limited practices. Lancaster, for example, was far from the form it hopes will bring its first league title when the Eagles made five errors during Saturday's final of the Daily News Invitational. However, Palmdale's 3-0 start was better than some expected and the Falcons might have their indoor workouts to thank for getting them ready. Coach John Livermont's previous experience in Washington made him used to holding practices indoors. ``I'm probably fortunate,'' Livermont said. ``I've got the experience coaching in a rainy environment, so I know a lot of different drills we can work on in the gym.'' ... Led by the hitting of senior outfielder Hector Chavez and the all-around play of junior shortstop/pitcher Jamie Mah, Sylmar reached the final of the Westside tournament, where the Spartans took an early lead but lost to Chatsworth 8-5. Like Sylmar, San Fernando entered the week 4-1. The Tigers have solid pitching and defense with senior All-City pitcher Abraham Gonzalez as well as Jesus Martinez, Jess Moreno and Ruben Navarez returning after playing key roles on the way to last season's league championship. Gonzalez struck out 14 in Tuesday's two-hit win against Banning.

SEVEN-DAY FORECAST

Game of the week

Chatsworth at Kennedy, today, 3 p.m.: The Daily News' two top-ranked teams, who both won tournament titles over the weekend, meet in a rematch of last year's City quarterfinal. It was considered an upset when Kennedy of Granada Hills beat Chatsworth then, but the Cougars went on to win a City title and haven't been slowed since, so a victory over the nationally ranked Chancellors wouldn't be surprising. Intensity for the nonleague game - which could be a preview of the City final - should be heightened by both sides having several players back from last year's young teams.

Potential hero

Tyler Carr earned two of Westlake's first three wins and could play a large part in keeping the Warriors among the elite after injuries have depleted de·plete

Bound to happen

Canyon senior Chris Seddon will give the Cowboys a good start in the Foothill League race by continuing his mastery of Hart. The Indians of Newhall have lost just three league games the past two years and two of them came against Seddon, a Loyola Marymount-bound left-hander.
