BASEBALL BEAT KEEPING TABS.

Former Cleveland of Reseda pitcher Byron Grubman was named California Collegiate Athletic Association freshman of the year and first-team all-conference at UC San Diego. Sophomore Mike Miller (Hart of Newhall) earned second-team all-CCAA honors despite missing three weeks with Cal State L.A. because of injury. ...

Fernando Valenzuela from St. Francis of La Canada homered twice Saturday for UNLV, finishing with six RBI in the 15-3 victory over San Diego State. The junior is tied for the team lead with 10 home runs. He is batting .343 with a team-high 55 RBI. ...

Agoura High graduate David Johnson is among the leading hitters at Gonzaga. He is batting .320 with seven home runs and 30 RBI. Among other locals helping the Bulldogs is former Camarillo ace Johnny Gonzalez, who earned his team-high fourth save last weekend.

RACKING UP THE RECORDS

When Jimmy Rohan filled Valencia's record books last season en route to earning Foothill League MVP honors, the Vikings figured his abundance of records would stand for a while. Until, this is, they saw the season junior Matt Aidem is having this year.

Aidem set two more team records Tuesday. He struck out 10 in six shutout innings against Burroughs of Burbank to earn the win and improve to 8-1, giving him the season record for victories. Aidem also went 2 for 3 with two doubles to move past Rohan for the Vikings' single-season hit record (51) as well as extend his record for doubles in a season (18). Aidem's .622 batting average has him on pace to shatter Rohan's record of .500. With three more regular-season games remaining, Aidem is nine RBI shy of Rohan's record of 42.

Aidem could also add Southern Section records to his collection. The section record for hits in a season is 68 by Gerald Laird of La Quinta of Westminster in 1998. Laird is also the one Aidem is chasing for the section doubles record of 22.

CHANGE FOR THE BETTER

D.J. Lewis left North Hollywood last season for a fresh start at San Fernando. The change of scenery has the senior catcher living up to the high expectations produced when he earned Sunset Six League MVP honors as a sophomore.

Lewis entered the week leading local City players with a .530 average and a region-best seven triples. He also has eight doubles, five home runs, 25 RBI and 12 stolen bases. Such numbers make opponents reluctant to pitch to him even with the bases empty, resulting in 19 walks.

``He's legit,'' San Fernando coach Armando Gomez said. ``He's probably the best guy I've ever coached. He's getting a lot of attention from the scouts. We're getting so many national cross checkers.''

The field isn't the only place where Lewis is working hard. He's improved his grades and is taking extra classes at Santa Monica College to fulfill college requirements. He recently signed with Arizona.

``He took care of business,'' Gomez said.

AROUND THE LEAGUES

--Foothill: Watch out for Saugus. While the rest of the league seems to be doing its best to avoid a spot among the elite, Saugus (13-7-1, 6-5-1) is on the rise, moving into third place last week with a victory over first-place Valencia. The Centurions haven't qualified for the playoffs since 1997. ``When we beat (Valencia), we knew we could beat anybody,'' Saugus first baseman Matt Eaton said. ...

Hart of Newhall catcher Ian Feldman, who recently committed to Claremont, tied the Indians' single-game record for doubles after hitting three in a 16-5 victory over Burbank on Tuesday. He was removed from the game before he got a chance to break the record.

--Frontier: Junior Greg Cole is among those playing a significant role in trying to ensure Oaks Christian of Westlake Village doesn't have to wait long for its first league title. Cole went 3 for 5 with three RBI in a victory over Santa Paula on Wednesday to move the league-newcomer Lions (18-9, 7-2) into a tie for first with Malibu (9-6-1, 7-2). Cole is batting .387, second among Oaks Christian regulars behind Peter Dunn, who entered the week batting .431.

--Marmonte: The season has been filled with disappointment for last-place Simi Valley (11-13, 2-10), but the play of the Pioneers' underclassmen provides hope for a brighter future. Sophomore Bryan Anderson has had one of the most encouraging seasons. He went 3 for 4 with a double in a 6-5 loss to crosstown-rival Royal on Wednesday and has been a reliable reliever. John Schock, who had eight strikeouts in five innings Wednesday, is another of the promising pitchers who should be back next season along with Dylan Gaughen.

--Mission: If Harvard-Westlake of Studio City continues its pace, the Wolverines could win their first league title. They swept Crespi of Encino last week and moved into a three-way tie for first when co-leaders Chaminade of West Hills and Alemany of Mission Hills lost Tuesday. With ace Jason Glushon and the California-bound, power-hitting pair of Josh Satin and Brennan Boesch leading the way, the Wolverines have also done well outside of league, being one of only two teams to defeat Quartz Hill on the field. ``They've always had a few guys who could hit,'' Alemany coach Randy Thompson said. ``The biggest difference is this year they've got eight guys out there who can play defense.'' Chaminade and Harvard-Westlake finish the regular season with a series against each other next week. ...

Whether the Celts were trying to or not, Crespi pulled off one of its easiest steals of the season Tuesday against Alemany on a play that left fans laughing and the Celts claiming that was exactly how the play was supposed to work. The play occurred in the first inning when Crespi's Ollie Linton headed to first after ball three. He did such a convincing job of acting as though he had drawn a walk, the runner on first jogged to second without a throw. It wasn't until an umpire told Linton to finish his at-bat that either side seemed to realize what happened. Tony Fiala, the baserunner, was about to go back to first before teammates shouted for him to stay put.

--Pacific: Crescenta Valley of La Crescenta (17-5, 10-2) has renewed hope for a share of the league title. Glendale upset first-place Arcadia 4-3 Tuesday, cutting the Apaches' lead over Crescenta Valley to one game. Arcadia will face the Falcons in next week's season finale. ...

Hoover of Glendale has lost two of its top players. First, shortstop Philip Estrella, who was batting .515, was ruled academically ineligible. Now, ace Tae Kwon, who led the region with a 0.42 ERA, is likely done for the season because of tendinitis in his elbow. The players' absence was evident when Hoover faced second-place Crescenta Valley on Friday. Crescenta Valley defeated the Tornadoes 1-0 this season but cruised to a 14-3 mercy-rule victory in the rematch. ...

With Hoover and Muir of Pasadena struggling, Glendale is in third place and on track for its first playoff berth since 1997 despite a 5-7 league record.

--Sunset Six: Gabriel Stasilli (7-2) pitched a three-hit shutout against Poly of Sun Valley to give Grant of Van Nuys a key victory Monday. But the momentum didn't last long as North Hollywood (9-4, 8-2) defeated Grant 5-2 Wednesday to pull into first place. Although the Huskies (9-4, 8-2) and Lancers (15-11, 9-3) are tied for first, North Hollywood has the advantage because it has fewer losses than Grant, which has played more games.

WHO'S HOT

--Jaime Ballesteros, Malibu: Among the region's RBI leaders, he added to his total by going 4 for 5 with a home run, a double and six RBI in a victory over Santa Clara on Tuesday.

--Donald Brown, Camarillo: Doing his best to ease the Scorpions' concerns about the impending graduation of Delmon Young, Brown hit his third grand slam of the season Wednesday to spark an eight-inning victory over Channel Islands, in which Camarillo rallied from a nine-run deficit. He also earned the pitching win to improve to 4-0. The junior, who entered the week batting. 500, has nine home runs and 40 RBI. He tripled in a victory over Pacifica of Oxnard on Monday.

--Aaron Feterl, Crescenta Valley: The junior had nine strikeouts in a one-hit shutout of Pasadena on Tuesday to improve to 4-0.

--Jason Glushon, Harvard-Westlake: Last week, he became the first to outduel Crespi of Encino ace Trevor Plouffe. He followed that with a four-hit shutout against St. Francis of La Canada to tie for the local lead in wins at 10-0, a school record for victories in a season.

--Matt Stein, Flintridge Prep: The freshman had 12 strikeouts in six innings Wednesday against Buckley of Sherman Oaks to improve to 5-2. He also drove in three runs with a fifth-inning triple.

--Adam Tripp, Saugus: After hitting three home runs in two games last week against Valencia, the senior added a double and two RBI in a victory Tuesday over Canyon.

UNHITTABLE

The two no-hitters thrown by local teams last week continued a trend of dominant pitching performances this season.

It also marked the second week in a row there were multiple no-hitters, with Thousand Oaks' Brian Bird and Royal of Simi Valley sophomore Clayton Edwards having thrown back-to-back no-hitters the previous week at the San Luis Obispo tournament. But not all of the performances were good enough for a victory. Edwards' seven-strikeout gem resulted in a 2-0 loss to Servite of Anaheim.

Here's a look at this season's no-hitters:

--Matt Ware (Quartz Hill) vs. Poly (5 inn.), March 7

--Eddie Cook/Matt Kelsey/Ryan McCarney/Vince Ortiz (Vasquez) vs. Masada Masada (məsā`də), ancient mountaintop fortress in Israel, the final outpost of the Zealot Jews in their rebellion against Roman authority (A.D. 66–73). Located in the Judaean Desert, the fortress sits atop a mesa-shaped rock that towers some 1,300 ft (400 m) above the western shore of the Dead Sea. (5 inn.), March 7

--Ryan McCarney (Vasquez) vs. Ribet Academy (5 inn.), March 13
