BASEBALL BEAT AROUND THE LEAGUES.Byline: Heather Gripp Staff Writer --Marmonte: Westlake went 10 years between winning its first Marmonte title and its second. But once the Warriors won their second title in 2000, they haven't stopped. Westlake clinched its fourth consecutive title Friday. ``We really wanted to win league,'' senior Cody Cipriano said. ``We feel this is our league, and we don't want anyone to take it away from us. ... Every year, it's `we've lost too many guys' or `we're too young' or something, so we aren't supposed to be able to do it again, but we always think we can.'' ... Newbury Park was eliminated by Calabasas for the second year in a row. Last season, the Coyotes defeated the Panthers in the Southern Section playoffs. This year, Calabasas joined the Marmonte and ended Newbury Park's season sooner, defeating the Panthers in a game for third place Monday. ... Being in last place isn't keeping Simi Valley from having a big finish. The Pioneers had back-to-back big wins last week. On Friday, the Pioneers defeated Newbury Park 6-4 on a game-winning home run by Dylan Gaughen. The next day, Simi Valley defeated Mission League co-leader Alemany of Mission Hills 11-10 with the potential tying run being thrown out at the plate to end the game. The Pioneers improved to 13-13 overall, but 10-3 outside of league. --Mission: Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks shortstop Jonathan Santana could accomplish the rare feat of not committing an error all season. The senior's errorless fielding has been a bright spot for a team that is in sixth place. Santana also leads the Knights in almost every offensive category, including a .505 on-base percentage. ... Chaminade of West Hills defeated Harvard-Westlake of Studio City on Tuesday to clinch at least a share of the Eagles' third consecutive title and deny the Wolverines a piece of their first title. The teams meet again in today's season finale. --Pacific: Crescenta Valley of La Crescenta assistant coach Dave Mendoza was named the AFLAC national assistant coach of the year. He was selected from among more than 350,000 nominations. In his seven years with the Falcons, Mendoza has helped Crescenta Valley to four league titles and the 1998 Southern Section Div. I championship. ``A great deal of our success is because of the dedication of David Mendoza,'' head coach Phil Torres said. ``He knows the game and cares for the players. He's an outstanding teacher and student of the game. David is a trusted friend and key member of this staff.'' ... Glendale clinched its first playoff berth since 1997 by defeating Muir of Pasadena on Tuesday. --Pacific View: With three games already scheduled for this week, Camarillo opted not to reschedule its rained out game against Carson for the championship game of the Redondo tournament. ... Camarillo's Delmon Young worked out Sunday for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, who have the first pick in next month's draft, and the Detroit Tigers, who have the third pick. He then got to see his brother Dmitri of the Tigers come within a homer of hitting for the cycle in Detroit's victory over the Devil Rays. --Prep: Flintridge Prep of La Canada freshman Matt Stein (5-3) did not allow an earned run Tuesday, but errors prevented the Rebels from winning the game and having a chance at the league title as they lost 3-1 to Pasadena Poly, which claimed its sixth consecutive title.
