BASEBALL BEAT : TOUGH DECISIONS.

Byline: - Lee Barnathan, Gerry Gittelson, Heather Gripp

At tonight's City Section seeding meeting, the top four selections won't be a surprise. Chatsworth will be No. 1, Poly will be fourth and Granada Hills and Banning will fight over who gets to be second and third.

The surprises come after that. This is the first time all teams are eligible to be placed in both the championship or division playoffs, meaning some teams will find themselves in unaccostomed brackets.

For example: Reseda won the Mid-Valley League title, but the league is considered among the City's weakest. The seeding committee must decide if the Regents deserve a berth above San Fernando San Fernando, city, Argentina

, which won five games all season but played in the Northwest Valley Conference, considered the City's toughest.

Only the first-place coaches have a vote, so Chatsworth's Tom Meusborn, Steve Thompson Steve Thompson or Steven Thompson may be:
  • Steve Thompson musician and producer.
  • Steve Thompson former rugby union player.
  • Steve Thompson game developer and independent musician.
  • Steve Thompson, a football manager and former player.
of Granada Hills, Mike Stone of Reseda and Poly's Chuck Schwal will decide. Most coaches surveyed emphatically believe all eight Northwest Valley teams should make the playoffs - Chatsworth, Granada Hills, El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:

, Kennedy and Birmingham in the Championship bracket and San Fernando, Cleveland and Taft in the Division bracket. Most also believe Reseda, Poly, Sylmar and Grant should make the Championship bracket, and Monroe should be seeded in the Division.

Busted trend

The trend has been for the Mission League to receive the at-large berth in Division IV. And there was no reason to assume anything different this year when Alemany coach Tim Browne Tim Browne is an American entrepreneur best known for his early involvement in several advanced technology start-ups including the Media Laboratory at MIT, The Interactive Television Consortium, Thinking Machines, and most recently, the International Children's Digital Library  called the Southern Section last weekend and was told the Indians made it.

Then the bracket came out Monday. Lompoc (17-8-1), winner of 10 of 13, received the at-large berth. Alemany (13-13) was done.

``We had told the kids we were in the playoffs. Imagine that,'' assistant coach Randy Thompson Randy Thompson is a Virginia-based Americana,alt-country singer/songwriter. As of 2006 he has recorded three CDs. He is one of a few artists who have reached the top 40 on Americana, country, and roots rock charts.  said.

Later Monday, Thompson received a call from Southern Section commissioner Bill Clark, who apologized for the misunderstanding. The person who spoke to Browne thought he was asking if the section had received Alemany's at-large petition, which it had.

``Obviously, it's a big discrepancy,'' Thompson said about Lompoc and Alemany's records. ``I can't see their schedule being any tougher. We beat three playoff teams (Paraclete, Duarte and Chaminade).''

Setting the record straight

On April 21, 1998 Montclair Prep defeated Pilgrim 59-1 in four innings, setting a Southern Section record for most runs scored in a game. (The scoresheet here shows only 58 runs; a second sheet was needed.)

Faith Baptist scored 57 runs against Pilgrim two weeks ago and set a Southern Section record with 50 hits.

A tale of two leagues

The same violation - an ejected player being banned from the next game, only to sit in the dugout - occurred recently in the Marmonte and Pacific View leagues. The resolutions were different.

Westlake forfeited a game to Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown. , costing itself a share of the league title. There was much discussion over T.O. coach Bill Sizemore's decision not to tell tell Westlake officials before the game that a player was committing a violation.

The effects extended beyond the two teams. Instead of finishing as part of a three-way tie for first, Royal finished second. Sizemore realized this and suggested the league recognize the Highlanders as co-champs. As far as the Southern Section is concerned, though, the Lancers lanc·er

are the outright champions and have the league's top seeding.

Sizemore's contention always has been a team should know the rules in advance. You don't tell an opposing coach a player is about to bat out of order, either. To paraphrase a saying: Never interrupt an opponent as he makes a mistake.

The coaches approved Sizemore's suggestion at Monday's league meeting. The decision now goes to the principals.

Rio Mesa forfeited a game to Oxnard, causing Rio Mesa to drop to third place and elevating Oxnard to second. The principals reversed the decision because they felt Oxnard coach Dan Garcia didn't exercise good sportsmanship when he failed to tell Rio Mesa before the game that a player was in violation. Garcia said he didn't know about the violation until after the game.

Westlake had three of its players, including two starters, suspended for the season for allegedly vandalizing Thousand Oaks' field last week in apparent retaliation for Sizemore's action.

Dustin Schramm, a junior right-hander at Desert Christian in Lancaster, has proved himself the region's most accurate pitcher. He's 11-1 with just five walks, a 1.00 ERA and 72 strikeouts in 63 innings, helping the Knights (21-1) to the second-best record in the state (behind 23-1 Santa Ana Santa Ana, city, El Salvador

Marmonte

Thousand Oaks starts one of the toughest paths through the postseason when it opens the Division I playoffs at home Friday against the winner of the Notre Dame-Arroyo Grande wild-card game. The Lancers' next two games would likely be against Long Beach Wilson and Crescenta Valley, both ranked. ``They basically want to get rid of us real fast,'' Sizemore said.

As the Marmonte's No. 2 representative, Royal hosts El Rancho El Rancho may refer to:

Royal and Westlake bashed their way into the postseason as both teams set season school home run records. Brian Lipman, Wes Martinelli and Casey O'Quinn all homered in Royal's win against Agoura on Friday to give the Highlanders 41 for the season, two more than the old school mark.

Lipman's 10 home runs ties the Royal single-season record set by Bobby Egan last year. Westlake entered Tuesday's wild-card game with 50 home runs. The mark is third-best all-time in the state and 15 more than the Warriors had last year. A small home field can't take all the blame for Westlake's numerous homers; 24 of the shots came on the road. Kevin Howard Kevin C. Howard (born June 25, 1981 in Hinsdale, Illinois) is a infielder in Minor League Baseball who plays for the Jacksonville Suns in the Double-A Southern League.  drew within two of Mike Lieberthal's school record by hitting his 12th home run of the season Friday.

Thousand Oaks prefers to get the job done with pitching. The Lancers have just 17 home runs, but two of the area's most effective pitchers in Chris Cordeiro (6-2, 2.96 ERA) and Tracy Goebel (6-1, 1.77).

Pacific View

To catcher Spencer Wyman, the playoffs mean practice hard and work on the little things, such as defending against the bunt, throwing from first to third base, and hit and run.

Wyman's hitting also has been impressive. Coach Scott Cline has helped Wyman by reminding him to look for certain pitches in certain counts and check if the opposing pitcher is in a rhythm.

Heritage

Grace Brethren received the area's only top seed (in Division VI) and a first-round bye. So the Lancers won't play until Tuesday, 11 days after their last game.

Coach Aaron Marcarelli doesn't prefer this. His player, Tim Thompson, knows it will be up to the team leaders (himself included) to keep the Lancers focused and not get lackadaisical lack·a·dai·si·cal

Pacific

Crescenta Valley, seeded fourth in Division I, plays either Downey or Rowland on Friday. Either way, the game won't be at 3:15 p.m. as the Southern Section suggests. C.V. coach Phil Torres wants a 7 p.m. game, but it will be up to the other team to agree. Torres thinks Downey will agree because it plays under the lights, too. But if a 7 p.m. start time isn't to be, then Torres will push for 4 p.m. - the Falcons' normal practice time.

Liberty

The Southern Section didn't give the league much respect, if the bracket placement means anything. Champion Viewpoint hosts L.A. Baptist, which battled for the Alpha title until arm trouble killed the Knights' chances. Runner-up Windward gets Kilpatrick, which led the Alpha until last week, when Paraclete passed it. Third-place Providence traveled to Flintridge Prep for a wild card Tuesday. A victory would send Providence to top-seeded Calvary Chapel of Santa Ana.

Nor has the league had much playoff success. Providence won the Division V title in 1986 with Jeff Cirillo and reached the quarterfinals in 1996. Viewpoint reached the quarterfinals last year.
