BASEBALL BEAT : TAKING IT EASY.

Byline: Chris Branam

Monroe (16-13-1) rallied in the second half of the season to win the Mid-Valley League title and earn a top-eight seed. The Vikings upset top-seeded Banning last year in the first round behind right-hander John Ennis.

``If (a team) calls me and makes a nice offer, and it's worth it to skip school for, then I'd like to play baseball,'' he said.

Planting the seeds

When the City Section holds its 4-A playoff-seeding meeting today, at least three teams from the area should be among the top four seeds.

Chatsworth (26-3) will get the No. 1 seed. The Chancellors, who won the West Valley League title for the seventh time in the 1990s, are ranked among the best teams in the state.

Either Kennedy (22-8) or Sylmar (20-6) could be the second seed. The Cougars have tradition on their side, but the Spartans might get the nod for only losing three Valley Pac-8 Conference games.

The right direction

After finishing back in the pack in the Mission League last season, St. Francis (15-8-1) finds itself in the second round of the Southern Section playoffs. Much of that credit goes to first-year coach John Noce.

Noce, 34, took over as the Knights' coach after bouncing around the baseball world for more than a decade. He played in two consecutive College World Series in the mid-1980s at the University of Miami This article is about the university in Coral Gables, Florida. ``I was kind of swimming around there for a couple of years,'' Noce said.
