He also pitches for the Knights, going 4-1 with a 3.37 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 27 innings.

Of course the Knights are more than just Petersen. Several football players proved their commitment when they arrived at 8 a.m. on Saturdays for fall games after playing football the night before.

Quarterback Scott Swensen is 3-0 with a 0.88 ERA and is batting .413 with a team-best 24 RBI, five homers and five doubles.

``Nobody else thought we would be this good,'' LAB coach Mark Hubbard said.

Golden: Palmdale (10-5, 4-1) had a big week with two wins over previously undefeated Lancaster (10-5, 5-2), which was coming off a 14-day Easter layoff. The rebuilding Falcons are looking like last year's Division I semifinalist, even though most key hitters graduated.

Senior Chris Testa started the season batting third but found success hitting leadoff. He has a region-high eight home runs and a .517 on-base percentage. The Cal State Northridge-bound center fielder has scored 20 runs in 15 games.

Marmonte: Royal needs one more win for a perfect record for the first half. Today's matchup against last-place Agoura might make the feat sound easy, but it's not. Royal hasn't beaten Agoura in their last four meetings.

Last week, Falco was 10 for 12 with five home runs, three doubles and 14 RBI. He's batting .594.

But a 15-5 win against Crespi on Saturday has coach Chuck Berrington predicting his team can sweep the second half and take the title.

Valley's strength. The Regents won six games in the L.A. Umpires tournament but have now lost nine of their last 10 games - all to Valley teams. Coach Mike Stone believes just one team will make the playoffs and he hopes it will be in the division playoffs.

``We don't belong in the (City bracket),'' Stone said. ``Everything outside of the area we can handle, but we're not on the level of Poly and Sylmar and Chatsworth and El Camino (Real).''

Mission: Crespi coach Scott Muckey thinks the split last week with Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. In the United States of America, Notre Dame  gives Crespi the advantage in the league race. His reasoning: Notre Dame has swept Chaminade. Crespi faces Chaminade next week. But first comes Harvard-Westlake, which Chaminade demolished last week.

Fortunately for Muckey, he might be able to save injured pitcher Tim Leveque until the Chaminade game.

Harvard-Westlake's Matt Thayer showed last week he always plays hard when he ran out a ground ball with his team trailing by more than 20 runs.

Northwest Valley: The City vetoed Chatsworth and Granada Hills' request to make up their game on May 20. Instead, the two teams will meet at Granada Hills April 30.

After suffering a loss, Granada Hills has rebounded to win its next game four times this season. After losing to Palmdale, the Highlanders beat Thousand Oaks. After a loss to Carson came a win over Mountain View. After losing to Chatsworth, it came back to rout Birmingham. Balkey was 7 for 10 in the tournament with three homers, seven RBI, two doubles and five runs scored. The pitching has been solid, with Kevin Rinder and Jordan Olson having ERAs at 1.01 or lower.

Tri-Valley: Oak Park has won four of the last five titles, but coach Eric Pryor wasn't sure the Eagles could win this year until he saw the pitching. Middle relievers Keith Boldroff and Tommy Hayes have shut down the opposition, helping the Eagles win games in the seventh or eighth innings.
