BASEBALL BEAT: T.O. HOT - WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT?

Byline: Heather Gripp Daily News Staff Writer

Predictions are proving to be useless in the Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. The Marmonte Leauge is part of the CIF Southern Section. Click here to view the league schedule. . Teams that seem unbeatable one day are blown out the next, while no team stays down for long.

Westlake, the preseason favorite of many, hasn't dominated. The Warriors' usually hard-hitting offense was shut down in a 12-1 loss to Newbury Park last week. Royal started slow but was good enough to beat defending league champion Camarillo 7-5 last Friday. Agoura started strong but has been pounded recently.

Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  (9-1-1, 3-0-1) is an exception to the league's up-and-down play. The Lancers' lone loss came in nonleague competition. After a last-place finish in 1997, the Lancers lanc·er

might have surprised opponents with their early success. It will be hard to consider the Lancers underdogs much longer, though, especially with junior Matt Rogers leaving opposing batters helpless at the plate.

Coach Bill Sizemore Bill Sizemore (born June 2, 1951 in Aberdeen, Washington) is a political activist in Clackamas, Oregon, United States.

Sizemore has never held elected office, but has nonetheless been a major political figure in Oregon since the 1990s.
said Thousand Oaks' formula for success is simple.

``We have a very solid sophomore class,'' he said, ``and our seniors are doing what seniors are supposed to do - carry a team''

Now batting, El Nino: One of the few forces more powerful than Thousand Oaks lately has been the weather, which has washed out several games during the past few weeks. Rain played a part in denying the Lancers another possible win Wednesday. The matchup between Thousand Oaks and Agoura was one of the few games attempted this week but was called because of rain when the teams remained deadlocked after 10 innings.

Agoura junior outfielder Mike Falco doubled to left-center with two outs and two strikes in the bottom of the seventh to drive in Matt Bernstein Matt Bernstein (born 1982-12-26 in Scarsdale, New York) was a football standout at University of Wisconsin-Madison, currently playing with the Philadelphia Soul of the Arena Football League after a stint in the National Football League with the Detroit Lions.  and Chris Poling and tie the game at 5-5. Neither team scored the rest of the way.

A two-run home run by Shea Johnson in the first helped the visiting Lancers take a 3-0 lead in the first, while the Chargers (8-3-1, 1-2-1) gradually chipped away.

A family affair: Grace Brethren might be young - most of the team consists of sophomores - but its unity has helped make the Lancers a top team. It's more than just a family-like atmosphere, though. Three of the Lancers really are family. Sophomores Tyson Larson, Ryan Shaffer and Jackson Beauchamp are all cousins.

The Lancers aren't the only ones with family ties. At Royal, senior ace Mike Byer throws to his younger brother Wiki is aware of the following uses of "'Younger Brother":

A costly K: When Camarillo's Eric Foster Eric Foster from Homestead, Florida is an American college football senior defensive lineman who plays for Rutgers University. High school career

struck out against Royal's Mike Byer last Friday, it turned into a triple play. A dropped third strike prompted Foster to run, but with first base occupied, he was already out. The other two Scorpion base runners took off and were eventually tagged out in run-downs, allowing the Highlanders to escape with their first shutout inning of the game. The Scorpions didn't score the rest of way and ended up losing.

No break: For most local teams, spring break won't mean a break from baseball. Among those participating in tournaments next week are Westlake, at the Las Vegas Las Vegas (läs vā`gəs), city (1990 pop. 258,295), seat of Clark co., S Nev.; inc. 1911.
