BASEBALL BEAT: LOBOS' YOUNG HITTING LIKE `BIG GUY' : JUNIOR SHORTSTOP ALREADY HAS TWO SINGLE-SEASON SCHOOL RECORDS.

Byline: Gerry Gittelson Daily News Staff Writer

Delwyn Young Delwyn Rudy Young (born June 30, 1982 in Los Angeles, California) is an outfielder in Major League Baseball who plays for the Los Angeles Dodgers. High School Years  of Littlerock High and his team are going in opposite directions.

The junior shortstop is batting .526 and already has set the school single-season baseball records for home runs (10) and doubles (10) with five games remaining. Meanwhile, his team has fallen out of contention in the Golden League, slipping to 6-11, 3-7 after Wednesday's 10-0 five-inning mercy loss at Lancaster.

Young, who has 19 career home runs at a school better known for its football program, has displayed his talents across the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. Young, whose father, Delwyn Young Sr., played minor-league baseball, is just 5-foot-8 and 170 pounds. He probably would be one of Southern California's top prospects next year if he were bigger.

Young believes he shouldn't be discounted.

``I hit like a big guy, so what does it matter?'' he said.

Testa-ing high: Palmdale slugger Chris Testa is by far the hottest hitter in the region. He is 7 for 7 with three home runs and 13 RBI RBI

Testa, a center fielder bound for Cal State Northridge, is batting .517 (31 for 60) with 11 home runs and 25 RBI with six games left. If he were batting cleanup instead of leadoff, Testa probably would be leading the Golden League in RBI. Highland's John Santor, who hit his eighth home run in Wednesday's 8-5 victory over Quartz Hill, has 36 RBI.

Just his time in the sun: Matt Harrington Matt Harrington (born February 1, 1982) is a baseball player who holds the record for the most times being chosen in the Major League Baseball amateur draft. Between 2000 and 2004, Harrington, a top prospect coming out of high school, was chosen in all five drafts, but never signed  (6-1) of Palmdale quashed rumors about a sore arm when the junior right-hander went seven strong innings and struck out seven to beat Littlerock 6-1 on Tuesday.

There was recurring speculation about elbow trouble when Harrington, whose 94-mph fastball makes him a major-league draft prospect for the year 2000, pitched just two innings the week before.

The elder Harrington said his son overdid it when he spent the weekend at the beach.

``Matt is fine. God I hate rumors,'' Bill Harrington said. ``One of the Highland parents called me and asked me if it was true that Matt has a sore elbow. Then Matt went out the next day and pitched a full game. He has no sore arm. He just got overexposed o·ver·ex·pose

Left 'em in the Dustin: Dustin Schramm of Desert Christian did a nice job avenging his only pitching loss of the season, as he struck out eight and limited Boron boron (bōr`ŏn) [New Gr. from borax], chemical element; symbol B; at. no. 5; at. wt. 10.81; m.p. about 2,300°C;; sublimation point about 2,550°C;; sp. gr. 2.3 at 25°C;; valence +3.  to six hits and two earned runs in Tuesday's important 8-3 Desert Mountain League win.

Schramm lost to Boron 3-2 three weeks earlier, Desert's only setback in what has been an otherwise perfect season at 16-1, 8-1. The Knights, seeking their first-ever baseball league title, started the week as the No. 2 team in the Southern Section Division V poll and Boron (9-4, 6-2) was fifth.

``This was a really big game, probably the biggest win we've ever had in nine years of existence,'' Schramm said.

Schramm, who was 2 for 3 with a double, triple and two RBI, is one of the best small-schools pitcher in the region. He's 8-1 with a 1.10 ERA, 62 strikeouts and five walks.

``Schramm doesn't throw real hard, but he kept us off-balance,'' Boron's David Caillier said. ``He's got a good curveball.''

Waiting for the Sundberg: Lancaster coach Doug Martin Doug Martin (born May 22, 1957 in Fairfield, California), is a former American professional football player who was selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the 1st round (9th overall) of the 1980 NFL Draft.  Eric Sundberg would emerge from his recent slump and never seriously considered moving him down in the order. Last year, Sundberg led the team with five home runs and 32 RBI even though his batting average batting average

Sundberg has bounced back the last two games (4 of 6), sparking Wednesday's 10-0 win over Littlerock by going 2 for 2 with a double, two RBI and a sacrifice fly.

``Eric had been struggling because he wasn't being aggressive enough at the plate,'' Martin said. ``But he was still the best power hitter we have, so I never really thought about moving him. He is a good enough hitter to figure out what he was doing wrong.''

Said Sundberg: ``I think I have been trying to guess too much this season. Now I'm starting to just hit.''

Add Lancaster: Meanwhile, Mike Hewson, hitting directly in front of Sundberg, has done a terrific job picking up the slack. Hewson is batting .565 with three home runs and 26 RBI.

Hewson has improved dramatically. He was cut from the freshman team, was a junior varsity junior varsity

``Mike Hewson is the surprise story of the league,'' Martin said.

``Hewson is hitting the ball real well,'' Sundberg said. ``He's very confident, and that confidence is working for him. I'm happy to see that.''
