BASEBALL BEAT: LANCASTER GETS OUT OF GATE FIRST : EAGLES IN SOLE POSSESSION OF FIRST.

Byline: Gerry Gittelson Daily News Staff Writer

Surprising Lancaster High, forecasted to finish no better than third in the Golden League, already has beaten Palmdale 13-1 on Friday and Highland 6-3 on Wednesday.

So Lancaster is in sole possession of first place, something entirely new at the fourth-year campus featuring seniors for the first time.

``Oh, this was definitely the biggest baseball week in school history,'' said outfielder Eric Sundberg, who homered and had two RBI RBI

in the Highland win. ``I think it's very important to get a good start in league. You kind of set the standard for the conference and you don't have to dig yourself out of hole.''

Right-hander Steve Payte (2-1) pitched five innings INNINGS, estates. Lands gained from the sea by draining. Cunn. L. Dict. h. t.; Law of Sewers, 31.  in both league wins. He struck out six against Highland.

Big hitters at Littlerock: Littlerock's Delwyn Young Delwyn Rudy Young (born June 30, 1982 in Los Angeles, California) is an outfielder in Major League Baseball who plays for the Los Angeles Dodgers. High School Years  and Mike Arviso have been tearing the cover off the ball.

Young was 3 for 4 with two home runs, a double and four RBI and Arviso was 4 for 4 with three home runs and four RBI in Wednesday's 16-8 win over Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

Young is batting .571 (20 for 35) with seven home runs, seven doubles and two triples. The junior shortstop has 13 RBI even though he bats leadoff, and he has scored nine runs.

``I'm just seeing the ball real well,'' Young said.

Arviso, a senior outfielder and All-Golden League football linebacker, is batting close to .500 and has five home runs in three games after homering in each game of Saturday's doubleheader against Rosamond.

Allen a hit as a hitter: Quartz Hill senior Travis Allen is finally getting at-bats this season after contributing only as a pitcher under former coach Dave Stradling, thanks to new coach Maury Cauchon.

And the left-hander is coming through in a major way.

Allen had two home runs and four RBI in Wednesday's wild 15-12 loss to Palmdale, a game that featured 10 home runs, including two each by Palmdale's Matt Plante and Mark Hendricks Mark Phillip Hendrick (born November 2, 1958) British politician and is the Labour Co-operative Member of Parliament for Preston.

``This is great I love it,'' Allen said. ``I'm doing real well.''

Allen, who hit 12 home runs in one Pony League The Pennsylvania-Ontario-New York League, also known as the PONY League, was a Class D minor league baseball circuit that played from 1939 through 1956. The forerunner of the modern Class A New York - Penn League, the PONY served as the first professional baseball address of  season as a 14-year-old, pleaded with Stradling to let him hit at Quartz Hill, but it was to no avail.

``I have no idea why coach Stradling never let me hit,'' Allen said. ``He just said, `You're a pitcher,' and there was nothing I could do.''

Allen has not let hitting affect his pitching skills. He struck out a career-best 13 in Friday's complete-game win over Antelope Valley. He is scheduled to pitch today against Highland, a dangerous team that is coming off a 6-3 loss to Lancaster and is looking to get back on track.

``I know Highland has a bunch of good hitters,'' Allen said. ``I just have to pitch smart.''

He was batting .579 entering Wednesday Lancaster loss, and as a pitcher he had one win and one save in two appearances.
