BASEBALL BEAT: CANYON WILL BE TESTED : SOPH SEDDON LOOKING GOOD.Byline: Scott Magoloff Daily News Staff Writer Coach Adam Schulhofer will discover a lot about his Canyon High baseball team in the coming weeks as it embarks on its most treacherous stretch of the season. The Cowboys (5-5, 3-2) have Foothill League leader Hart (11-1, 5-0) and second-place Saugus (6-4-1, 3-1-1) as the next two teams on its schedule. But it gets better. The way the league is arranged this season, after the first round, each team faces each other team in a back-to-back, Tuesday/Friday matchups to complete each season series. So Canyon will face Hart today and Friday, then Saugus next Tuesday and Friday for four consecutive games that will serve to shape the Foothill landscape. ``You can say our season will rely upon what happens in the next four (games),'' Schulhofer said. ``We've got to win a lot of these next four games; that's what it looks like. Then we'll go from there.'' Canyon has a lot to be encouraged about in the Hart game. The Cowboys are coming off an 18-2 win over Burbank and are the only team that Hart has not defeated via the 10-run mercy rule A mercy rule, also well known by the slightly less polite term slaughter rule (or, less commonly, knockout rule and skunk rule), brings a sports event to an early end when one team has a very large and presumably insurmountable lead over the other team. . Schulhofer also noted that his team left 10 runners stranded against Hart and did not get the big hits when they were needed. One player who can provide those hits is Garrett Behnke, but Schulhofer is unsure of his playing status for today's game, which is the first one he'll be eligible for since serving a two-game suspension for cutting a class. A starting lineup in sports refers to the set of players actively participating in the event when the game begins. The players in the starting lineup are commonly referred to as starters, whereas the others are substitutes ,'' Schulhofer said. ``A message needs to be sent about cutting class and I know he's doing everything he can to make up for that. It hurts us to not have him, but you can't get away with that stuff.'' The addition of another effective arm is more than welcomed by Schulhofer, as senior Mike Munn (1-3) has struggled despite striking out 27 batters BATTeRS (バッターズ) stands for Bisei Asteroid Tracking Telescope for Rapid Survey. Schulhofer said Munn is learning how to make the big pitch in tough situations and that he is improving in that area. Unstoppable? Hart has blown through every other Foothill League team through the first round of play and has outscored its opponents all season by a combined score of 132-31. Players like junior Jamie Shields (.471, 18 RBI), junior Matt Friedrechsen (.400, 2 HRs, 13 RBI) and sophomore Billy Susdorf (.500, 13 RBI) have been hot all season. But junior Ryan Haag (.439, 9 RBI) and senior Tim Hutting (.583, 13 RBI) have improved their numbers of late. Haag went 3 for 4 in Tuesday's 7-1 win against Valencia and Hutting was 1 for 3 with one RBI.
