BASEBALL BEAT: CAN'T GET A BREAK : TEAMS' PLANS SCRAMBLED.

Byline: Lee Barnathan Daily News Staff Writer

They thought they were in spring-break tournaments. One had paid the money and had received a signed contract in return. The other had been led to believe a spot would be available.

But the Saugus and Canyon high baseball teams found out there weren't spaces for them. Saugus got bumped from the Bishop Gorman tournament in Las Vegas Las Vegas (läs vā`gəs), city (1990 pop. 258,295), seat of Clark co., S Nev.; inc. 1911. Fortunately, both found a place to play in Las Vegas. Saugus got bumped from the Bishop Gorman because tournament organizers had too many teams sign up. So Saugus coach Doug Worley got back his $450 registration check.

``They admitted they screwed up, at least,'' Worley said. ``Unfortunately, this is not uncommon anymore. We had a signed contract. They let us know at the last minute.''

The last minute is February, which gives teams little time to find a new tournament.

Canyon and Saugus each lost to Durango and one Utah team and beat the other Utah team. They didn't play each other.

The 1-2 record gave Canyon a 5-10 mark on the season. Ben Metcalf leads the Cowboys in several offensive categories, including 44 at-bats, 18 runs, 22 hits, six doubles, one triple and no strikeouts. His .500 average is tops among the starters. Yet he has played in just 13 games.

One problem is there aren't more players putting up similar numbers than these two. Five other players are batting above the team average of .312, and the team's ERA is 6.08.

More success elsewhere: Hart and Valencia fared well at their tournaments. The Indians (16-1) went 5-1 and handed two teams their first loss of the season (Hart also lost for the first time, which denied it a spot in the tournament final).

``It was 9:30 a.m. and it had been raining. The field was wet and the ball was slick,'' Hart coach Bud Murray said. ``It was a 1-0 game in the fifth inning and the wheels kind of came off quick. The pitchers we saw were very good. We had the best team up there, but the day we lost we didn't.''
