BASEBALL BEAT: AT ANY COST? : WESTLAKE RESENTS T.O. TACTIC.

The 5-4 win in Thousand Oaks' final league game meant the Lancers (18-5, 10-2) would have earned at least a piece of the title regardless of the outcome in their previous game.

It's the way they went about getting the win in that previous game that is drawing criticism. A 3-1 Westlake win that put the Warriors into a tie for first place was reversed because an ineligible Westlake player sat in the dugout. Thousand Oaks coach Bill Sizemore Bill Sizemore (born June 2, 1951 in Aberdeen, Washington) is a political activist in Clackamas, Oregon, United States.

Sizemore has never held elected office, but has nonetheless been a major political figure in Oregon since the 1990s.

before the game started but didn't say anything to the Warriors.

``Our guys'll remember this,'' said Westlake coach Chuck Berrington, who said Sizemore, a friend, was the last coach he'd expect to use such tactics to win. ``We'll win on the field next year. Who's the team that's done it five out of the last six times?

``In my mind we're still 18-4.''

The Warriors (17-5-1, 7-4) are in third place entering today's game at Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969. .

Royal (17-5-1, 8-3) travels to Agoura to play for second place. The Chargers (8-14-1, 2-9) are coming of a 14-11 win Wednesday against Moorpark. Brian Ashford hit a three-run home run to highlight a 10-run sixth inning and give Agoura its first Marmonte win since beating the Highlanders in the first half of league.

He'd trade the fish for outs: Westlake pitcher Mike Alba can't figure out his slump. The senior right-hander has had an up-and-down season but was throwing one of his best games April 28 against Royal. Then, with two outs in the fourth inning, he lost his ability to retire batters and hasn't found it since.

Alba often finds luck by going fishing the day before games. The more fish he catches, the better he does on the mound. He tried the trick Monday after practice and caught 17 fish.

He appeared in relief Tuesday against Camarillo and lasted only -2/3 of an inning, giving up two runs on three hits and hitting a batter.

``That's when you know you're struggling,'' Alba said, ``when you catch a lot of fish and everything still goes wrong.''

Alba (5-1) entered the season as one of the Warriors' top pitchers. He showed the command that led Westlake through the stretch run last season when he opened the Marmonte season by outduelling Newbury Park's Tyler Johnson Tyler Johnson (born June 7, 1981), is an American baseball player born in Columbia, Missouri.

Johnson spent most of the 2006 season with the Cardinals' minor league team, the Memphis Redbirds, but appeared in 56 games and pitched 36.1 innings with the St. Louis Cardinals.
2-1. Now Alba is wondering if he'll ever be trusted to pitch again.

The payoff: Eric Peach was stuck playing right field and wasn't hitting as well as he knew he should. The Simi Valley junior wanted a change and he got it. Now he's the Pioneers' leading hitter and is back at his favorite position, catcher.

``He's really turned it around,'' Pioneers coach Joe Gordon

``He's really having a good year. He's one of the bright spots in our year.''

Simi Valley is 2-9 in league entering today's season finale against Westlake.

``That's the worst part,'' said Peach. ``I hate losing. I'd rather have our team do well than just me do well. I'd rather be on a winning team than a losing one.''

With most of the Pioneers expected back and a season of experience with Gordon under their belts, Peach could get his wish next year.

Sulser does it again: It doesn't matter if he starts or relieves, Tony Sulser continues to turn in effective performances for Calabasas. The junior improved to 7-2 Tuesday when he struck out 11 in the Coyotes 5-2 win against Malibu to clinch the Frontier League The Frontier League, based in Troy, Illinois, is a professional, independent baseball organization located in the Midwestern United States and Western Pennsylvania. Sulser began the season as the Coyotes' No. 1 starter but was moved to closer to keep his arm strong and give others work. He was recently moved back to starter. Tuesday's game was his second consecutive complete-game victory.
