BASEBALL: WARR NO LONGER STATS HIS CASE THIRD BASEMAN PUSHING CANYON TOWARD PLAYOFFS.

Byline: HEATHER GRIPP

Staff Writer

CANYON COUNTRY - Matt Warr spent his first season on the Canyon High of Canyon Country baseball team checking his statistics to see how he compared with the rest of the Foothill League.

This season, he only looks to see where his team is in the standings.

If he glanced at his statistics, however, Warr would find himself atop several categories, including home runs and RBIs. Until this week, he also had the league's highest batting average batting average

Warr, who has signed with Cal State Northridge, began the season with 16 hits in the first eight games and hasn't cooled off much. He enters today's game at Golden Valley batting Batting has several meanings:

.485 with 32 RBIs and nine home runs. He has three home runs in the past three games.

Warr gives much of the credit to his teammates, who have been successful enough atthe plate that opponents haven't often resorted to pitching around him.

Warr's success has hardly been a surprise to Canyon, where first-year coach Brandon Montemayor had heard rave reviews about the player he was inheriting in·her·it

Warr hit a team-high .410 with 23 RBIs and five home runs last season for a losing Cowboys cowboys, in American history.

 team.

"We expected a lot of him this year," Montemayor said. "We saw him in the fall and last summer, so we knew this kid was a very special player.

"He works real hard and he takes instruction well.

"We think he's one of the better third baseman in the state, definitely one of the better hitters."

The Cowboys also value the example Warr sets as their captain.

"He's a hard worker," Montemayor said. "He expects a lot out of his teammates and himself. He's one of the guys the kids in the program should look up to and do. He makes everyone around him better. They play up to his level."

Warr hopes his lead will take Canyon to the playoffs. Warr saw the Southern Section championship ring Montemayor won as a player at league rival Hart of Newhall and he wants one of his own.

The Cowboys have won five of their past six games after a 7-8 start, which included an 0-3 beginning to league play.

"There was a cold moment there," Warr said. "But we turned it around and we've just kept rolling. Our team motto is 'Don't settle.' Don't settle for second, don't settle for winning by one run, don't settle for anything. We always want to keep getting better. That's what I'm focused on this year."
