Warr gives much of the credit to his teammates, who have been successful enough atthe plate that opponents haven't often resorted to pitching around him. Warr's success has hardly been a surprise to Canyon, where first-year coach Brandon Montemayor had heard rave reviews about the player he was inheriting in·her·it v. in·her·it·ed, in·her·it·ing, in·her·its v.tr. 1. a. "We expected a lot of him this year," Montemayor said. "We saw him in the fall and last summer, so we knew this kid was a very special player. "He works real hard and he takes instruction well. "We think he's one of the better third baseman in the state, definitely one of the better hitters." The Cowboys also value the example Warr sets as their captain. "He's a hard worker," Montemayor said. "He expects a lot out of his teammates and himself. He's one of the guys the kids in the program should look up to and do. He makes everyone around him better. They play up to his level." Warr hopes his lead will take Canyon to the playoffs. Warr saw the Southern Section championship ring Montemayor won as a player at league rival Hart of Newhall and he wants one of his own. The Cowboys have won five of their past six games after a 7-8 start, which included an 0-3 beginning to league play. "There was a cold moment there," Warr said. "But we turned it around and we've just kept rolling. Our team motto is 'Don't settle.' Don't settle for second, don't settle for winning by one run, don't settle for anything. We always want to keep getting better. That's what I'm focused on this year." heather.gripp@dailynews.com (818) 713-3607 CAPTION(S): photo, 3 boxes Photo: (1) Canyon High of Canyon Country third baseman Matt Warr is leading the Foothill League in home runs and RBIs this season.
