BASEBALL: VIEWPOINT PLAYS UNDER PROTEST.

Byline: Daily News

Viewpoint of Calabasas lost 8-7 Tuesday Tuesday: see week.  to host Avalon Avalon (ăv`əlŏn), in Celtic mythology, the blissful otherworld of the dead. In medieval romance it was the island to which the mortally wounded King Arthur was taken, and from which it was expected he would someday return.  in the semifinals of the Southern Section Div. VII playoffs -- but if Viewpoint has its way, the game will be replayed.

Viewpoint filed a protest prior to the game because the field dimensions were not suited for baseball. For instance, the mound mound, prehistoric earthwork erected over a burial place as a memorial or landmark, a defensive embankment, or a site for ceremonial or religious rites. Such structures are found in many parts of the world, but the name is applied in particular to those of North  was measured at 62 feet rather than 60 feet, six inches and the distance between home and first base was 92 feet rather than the normal 90.

In addition, the entire outfield fence was 248 feet from home plate -- and all balls hit over the fence were ruled ground rule doubles ground rule double

. That took away any chance for a home run, and caused some balls that would normally have been easy fly outs to be doubles.

The reason for the discrepancies and odd layout is because Avalon has played most of the season on the school softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  field after its baseball field was damaged in a fire.

"It was a joke," Viewpoint coach Frank Pontello said. "To get to this point in the season and play on a field like this was disappointing, to say the least. When your pitcher is used to throwing from 60 feet (six inches), and now he has to throw from 62, that's going to make a big difference."

Viewpoint immediately filed a protest at the start of the game. The hope now is that the Southern Section will let the teams replay the game at a regular field. A decision is expected today.

The Div. VII championship game is scheduled for Saturday, so there is time to play a make-up Make-up

"To me, that's the most fair thing to do," Pontello said. "Hopefully, we'll play another game."
