BASEBALL: STOCK HELPS LEAD WEST.

Byline: HEATHER GRIPP Staff Writer

SAN DIEGO San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay.  -- Robert Stock already believes his best path to the major leagues is as a catcher. Others aren't so certain, considering the Agoura High senior also is a pitcher who throws in the mid-90s.

Instead of having to choose just yet, Stock took the opportunity Saturday to show he belongs among the nation's high school elite at both positions.

In addition, the San Diego Surf Dawgs of the independent Golden Baseball League use the park as their home field. . He later moved to catcher and contributed a home run in the West's 9-8 victory.

``I see him as a pitcher,'' West coach Dennis Pugh said. ``He's got a heck of an arm. But he's such a good hitter. He'll have to make a decision in the next year or so. I'm glad I don't have to make that decision.''

Stock's sixth-inning, leadoff home run over the 410-foot mark in center field drew bigger raves, but he was most excited by his pitching, something he said he still enjoys even if it isn't in his future.

``I thought the pitching was pretty exciting,'' Stock said. ``That's the first time in a month I've thrown in a competitive situation. And to go out there against guys like this. ... I was a little nervous.''

Stock, who was clocked at 94 mph, walked the first batter he faced and allowed two singles and two unearned runs in his only inning on the mound.

A run-scoring double by Jon Gilmore put the West ahead for good during a four-run, first-inning rally off East starter Michael Main.

Stock extended the West's lead to three at 7-4 in the sixth with his solo home run to lead off the inning.

The East had the tying run on third in the ninth, but West reliever Erik Goeddel preserved the win with a strikeout.

``It's just been such a great experience,'' Stock said of his final baseball event of a busy summer. ``All 38 of us, and being on national television, it doesn't get much better than that.''
