and Grant (18-9) took advantage of two Highlanders (20-7) errors to score three unearned runs. Grant next plays Thursday at 12th-seeded South Gate.

Jose Munoz (5-3), who threw one inning of relief, got the win. Frank Amaya pitched the final two innings INNINGS, estates. Lands gained from the sea by draining. Cunn. L. Dict. h. t.; Law of Sewers, 31.  of one-hit ball for his first save.

The Lancers had expected to see Loe, Granada Hills' top pitcher with 10 wins, 11 complete games and a 1.94 ERA. To prepare, Grant coach Jeremy Lawrence turned up the pitching machine A pitching machine is a machine that automatically pitches a baseball to a batter at different speeds and styles.  also expected to throw Loe until the pitcher phoned him Monday night to say his arm was too sore.

``I threw a lot of innings this year (75-2/3 this season),'' Loe said Tuesday, ``more than I ever have in my life. I was a little fatigued.''

Thompson started Peter Tuber tuber, enlarged tip of a rhizome (underground stem) that stores food. The Lancers had no trouble adjusting to the slower speeds. Marble's bases-loaded triple, and Jon Spielvogel's sacrifice fly gave the Lancers a 4-0 lead. It wouldn't have been as bad of an inning had Dan Frisbee not been called for catcher's interference, which loaded the bases and brought up Marble.

``We knew we weren't ranked 13th. Everyone gives us no respect,'' Marble said. ``Since we're from the East Valley, we wanted to represent our league well.''

Tuber gave up all seven runs in 5-2/3 innings.

Marble tripled and Spielvogel again hit a fly ball to start a three-run sixth inning. Marc Soulema also doubled in a run, and Grant got its final run when Soulema scored after Granada Hills reliever Peter Gunny threw wildly to second on a double-steal.

The final run proved important because Jon Bringuier and Frisbee hit back-to-back homers off Munoz to open the sixth, cutting Grant's lead to 7-6. But Amaya shut the door.

``Too many mistakes,''Frisbee said. ``It seemed like every time they made a mistake, we made two more.''
