BASEBALL: ECR'S TRIUMPH IS A FOUR-GONE CONCLUSION PETTIS SHUTS DOWN CHATSWORTH AGAIN EL CAMINO REAL 4, CHATSWORTH 1.

Byline: HEATHER GRIPP Staff Writer

Not many pitchers have figured out how to quiet a Chatsworth High offense that scored 60 runs in five games last week and entered this week having scored at least five runs in each of its past 13 games.

Pettis held Chatsworth to two hits in last year's City Section baseball championship game, and he shut down the visiting Chancellors again Tuesday in a 4-1 victory that put the Conquistadors See also

"Chatsworth games are always more intense," said Pettis (2-2). "If you don't live to play games like this, you shouldn't be playing."

Top-ranked Chatsworth scored its lone run on a seventh-inning home run by Mike Moustakas Mike Moustakas (born September 11, 1988 at Chatsworth, California) is a Shortstop[1] who was drafted by the Kansas City Royals of Major League Baseball 2nd overall in the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft. , who also doubled in the fifth inning. The homer to right-center was Moustakas' team-high eighth of the season and sixth in the past six games.

Pettis, who struck out three batters, credited big plays by ECR's defense for helping him get away with three walks and two hit batters. He got out of a bases-loaded jam in the third inning, and Chatsworth stranded seven runners in scoring position In the sport of baseball, a baserunner is said to be in scoring position when he is on second or third base. The distinction between being on first base and second or third base is that a runner on first can usually only score if the batter hits an extra base hit, while a runner on .

"He didn't have his best stuff today," ECR coach Matt LaCour said. "But he found ways to get outs when he needed to. He pitched tough when the situation was tough."

The Conquistadors took the lead in the second inning on a two-run double by Todd Eskelin. The rally was started with a single by J.P. Hollywood, who was 3 for 3 with an RBI RBI

Pettis had two hits, and Tyler Kolodny drove in the first of two ECR runs in the fifth.

The loss was the first of the season for Chatsworth junior right-hander Trent Jones (6-1). Dazzling defense, including multiple gems by third baseman Matt Dominguez, was not enough to allow Jones to overcome seven hits surrendered in three-plus innings.

"I don't think we played our best today," Pettis said. "But we got it done when we had to. That's how you win ballgames. That's what's good about this team. We find ways to win."
