BASEBALL: CANYON TAKES ADVANTAGE VALENCIA OUTHITS COWBOYS 10-1, BUT MISTAKES TOO GREAT CANYON 3, VALENCIA 2.

Byline: Heather Gripp Staff Writer

VALENCIA - Joe Gault n. 1. (Geol.) A series of beds of clay and marl in the South of England, between the upper and lower greensand of the Cretaceous period.  earned a victory against the Valencia High baseball team for the second time this season. But the Vikings weren't beaten by Gault as much as they were beaten by themselves, which only adds to the uncertainty about Valencia's ability to remain in first place in the Foothill League.

Canyon took advantage of two Valencia errors and a wild pitch that brought in the deciding run to defeat the Vikings 3-2 on Friday at Valencia.

The victory ended a streak of three consecutive losses for the Cowboys cowboys, in American history.

Gault had 10 strikeouts, but the Vikings outhit Canyon 10-1.

``It's embarrassing,'' said Valencia coach Jared Snyder, whose team entered the game ranked No. 2 in the region by the Daily News. ``It's flat- out embarrassing to have your pitcher throw a game like that and lose because you couldn't field the ball.''

Vikings hard-luck junior Jared Clark fell to 2-3 and his ERA dropped to 0.58. He struck out seven and walked four. The only hit Clark allowed was a third-inning single by Billy Omahen.

Another throwing error had started the Cowboys' two-run, third-inning rally. A bases-loaded walk to Buch Britton provided Canyon's first run, and Clay Britton tied the game with a sacrifice fly that scored Omahen.

The Vikings, who took a 2-0 lead when Matt Aidem had Valencia's third consecutive two-out hit of the second inning, had several opportunities to reclaim the lead. But Valencia (11-3, 5-2) stranded strand 1

``We just didn't have anyone clutching up when it counts,'' Snyder said.

Gault also deserved some credit for Valencia's struggles.

``I wanted it big-time,'' Gault said of the chance to put his team back in the league race. ``This is big. This is going to boost the morale on the team.''

Canyon and Valencia do not meet again during the regular season, but the Vikings realize they are left with little room for error no matter whom they face.

``We allowed two teams to get back in the race,'' Snyder said. ``We had a chance to pull away coming back from spring break. ... When you give up one hit and get 10, it's hard to say you were beat. We beat ourselves. We flat-out beat ourselves.''
