Three teams, one goal: advance to the second round.

That's the objective for Quartz Hill, Lancaster and Palmdale, the Golden League representatives at today's Southern Section Div. III first-round playoffs.

Quartz Hill, which started 7-9, won its last nine games to claim a share of its fourth consecutive league title. Lancaster couldn't have asked for a better finish as senior Josh White pitched a no-hitter in the season finale to clinch a piece of the Eagles' first title since 2001. White struck out 10 in a 1-0 victory Friday over Highland.

Palmdale, which started 7-0 and was ranked as high as fourth in the division, finished the season with losses in six of their last eight games to drop the Falcons from first to third place.

Despite their second-half swoon, Palmdale will not have to play a wild-card game like they did a year ago after finishing third. The Falcons open on the road today against Gahr of Cerritos. A victory would mark the first time Palmdale's seniors have advanced past the first round.

Winning a share of the league title didn't help Lancaster much in its postseason draw. The Eagles have to play on the road against El Rancho El Rancho may refer to:

  • El Rancho High School, a public school in Pico Rivera, California
  • El Rancho Hotel & Motel, a Gallup, New Mexico Hotel listed as a National Historic Site

Quartz Hill is at home against Norwalk, with the winner advancing to a probable matchup with top-seeded La Quinta A division of Seagate that was originally an acquisition and then absorbed into the company by 1999. Quinta was the developer of Optically Assisted Winchester (OAW) technology. See OAW.  of Westminster.

Despite having so much going right for it lately, Quartz Hill did endure a setback last weekend when third baseman third baseman

Kyle Harris, who drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning in the title-clinching 5-4 victory Friday over Palmdale, broke his ankle.

While Quartz Hill, Lancaster and Palmdale each made the playoffs last season, all three failed to advance past the first round. Today's winners will play in the second round Tuesday.

While others falter, Lobos go from fifth place to a postseason berth

Two weeks ago, the season looked pretty grim for the Littlerock softball team. Littlerock coach Sarah Adams figured her team was in trouble after it lost to Highland, but she never lost hope.

``I just kept telling the girls, 'This will all pay off at the end of the season, it'll all make sense,' and then crossed my fingers that I wasn't lying to them,'' Adams said.

Instead of dwelling on the situation, Littlerock focused on its remaining games and hoped someone could help the Lobos pass Highland in the standings and get into the final playoff spot.

It happened when Adams and the Lobos least expected it. Highland lost 3-0 to Knight High, a first-year varsity program; 4-0 to Palmdale, a team desperate to make the playoffs; and 4-3 to league champion Lancaster.

Littlerock won its last three games and took third place and the league's final playoff berth by two games.

``It's awesome the way it worked out,'' Adams said. ``This year has really taught my girls a lot of character. They always believed everything was happening for a reason.''

If Lancaster can get past Glendale, second-seeded Oaks Christian of Westlake Village likely awaits in the second round Tuesday. Oaks Christian swept Lancaster 6-0 and 13-1 in a doubleheader April 20, although Lancaster shuffled its lineup in both games.
