BARTON LIFTS CSUN IN OT MATADORS KEEP PACE IN BIG WEST CSUN 3, UCSB 2.

Byline: Lee Barnathan Staff Writer

It takes one to know one, and Josh Barton knows ``big white guys.''

Barton, a Cal State Northridge midfielder, stands 6-foot-1, similar to the average size of UC Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850.  soccer players.

Yet Barton knew something UCSB UCSB University of California at Santa Barbara

players didn't: where to be and how to capitalize.

Barton knocked in a rebound 5 minutes, 50 seconds into overtime Sunday night Sunday Night, later named Michelob Presents Night Music, was an NBC late-night television show which aired for two seasons between 1988 and 1990 as a showcase for jazz and eclectic musical artists.  to give Cal State Northridge a 3-2 Big West Conference victory over the first-place Gauchos in front of 626 fans at North Campus Stadium.

The match, as Barton saw it, was predictably rough: Santa Barbara (6-4-3, 2-1-1) committed 26 fouls and earned six yellow cards, including two after the match ended, and one red card to goalie Danny Kennedy Danny Kennedy MLA (Born 6 July 1959) is a unionist politician in Northern Ireland and the current deputy leader of the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) Assembly Group. , which set up CSUN's (7-3-1, 2-1) second goal. CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  committed 12 fouls and earned four yellow cards.

``Just look at them when they came out on the field,'' Barton said. ``Big white guys. Nothing against big white guys. I'm a big white guy.''

His size came in handy Sunday. The victory was important for the Matadors, who risked falling behind UCSB, Cal State Fullerton (which beat CSUN 3-0 on Friday) and UC Irvine in the conference race. Instead, their six points keep them tied with the Gauchos and three points behind Fullerton and Irvine. CSUN plays at Irvine on Sunday.

Barton scored following a John Ortega Seaman John Ortega (born in 1840 in Spain), was the first Hispanic sailor to be awarded the United States' highest military decoration for valor in combat — the Medal of Honor — for having distinguished himself during the South Atlantic Blockade by the Union Naval  free kick that hit the left post. Barton stood near CSUN midfielder Yossi Raz, who said Ortega's kick was going in. Barton knew better and reached the ball first, putting it into the right corner for his first goal of the season.

Arshak Abyanli scored the first two CSUN goals, including one in the 76th minute on a penalty kick that followed Kennedy knocking down Brian Phillips. That gave the Matadors a 2-1 lead.

Santa Barbara's Joe Hubay-Dies tied the match with six minutes to play.
