BART Receives San Francisco Award.

OAKLAND, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 31, 2003

BART has received the annual San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden  Beautiful Award for its renovation of the 16th Street BART Station's southwest Plaza Southwest Plaza is an enclosed shopping mall located in the city of Littleton, outside Denver, Colorado, United States. The mall is two levels with over 150 stores, plus a food court. .

The renovation project, which was dedicated on May 17, 2003, brought new life as well as a face-lift to this busy plaza area. Work on the project began in June, 2001: it included new granite paving, new and improved lighting, landscaping, benches, and public art by local Mission Community artists.

BART Director Tom Radulovich, who accepted the award on behalf of BART, said that this project was by and large a grass roots community effort with strong involvement from, both residents and merchants in the Mission District, the Urban Ecology, and the Mission Housing Development Corporation. Other partners with BART were the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC mtc - A Modula-2 to C translator.

"I believe that through this community partnership we have created an artistic jewel in the heart of the Mission District," Radulovich said.

Funding for the project, which cost $4.1 million, came from a federal "Transportation for Livable Communities" grant from the MTC, BART and San Francisco sales tax sales tax, levy on the sale of goods or services, generally calculated as a percentage of the selling price, and sometimes called a purchase tax. It is usually collected in the form of an extra charge by the retailer, who remits the tax to the government.  proceeds through SFCTA.
