BART Millbrae Station Work Begins.

MILLBRAE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 9, 1998--The first work on the BART Millbrae Intermodal Station is scheduled to begin Monday (Oct. 12) with installation of concrete test piles sunk deep into the sediments underlying the station site.

Using a massive drilling rig, crews will bore down 30 to 35 feet, filling a 30-inch diameter hole with wet cement as they go. The cement is mixed with the surrounding soil, creating a slurry-like material. Lengths of steel pipe are then pressed down into the hole to serve as reinforcement. The slurry hardens around the steel, creating a slender piling extending deep underground.

The half-dozen or so test piles are planned. The cement-soil slurry will be allowed to cure for about two weeks, then tests will be performed to measure the strength of the piles. The measurements will help station designers determine how many piles are needed, along with their depth and spacing. Several hundred pilings will likely be necessary for the station.

The work is being done by Sverdrup/Conco, the joint venture awarded a $70.5 million contract to build the BART Millbrae Intermodal Station, which will be the southern terminus of the BART extension to San Francisco International Airport Coordinates:
