Lake Merritt is a large tidal lagoon that lies just east of downtown Oakland, California. It is surrounded by parkland and city neighborhoods. A popular 3.5 mile (~5.6 km) walking and jogging path runs along its perimeter. Parking lot. Starting Dec. 1, 2002, BART will reserve up to 25 percent of the parking spaces in most of its 29 existing parking lots for the Monthly Reserved Parking program -- that's more than 9,500 spaces systemwide. Spaces will be phased in based upon demand. Permits will be station specific and cost $63 per month. Up to 10 cars can be registered to a permit so that families can move their permit among their various vehicles. The permit will guarantee the user parking in a designated parking area located close to the station entrance until 10 a.m. each Monday Monday: see week. through Friday. Unfilled parking spaces in the designated area will be free and open to all BART riders after 10 a.m. The other 75 percent of the parking spaces will be free and open to all BART passengers. Since BART began accepting subscriptions to the service last week, more than 600 customers have signed up for Reserved Paid Parking.
