Type of Crime/Incident: Possession of Marijuana for Sales

Day/Date/Time of Occurrence: 12/12/01 Wednesday 7:30 p.m.

Location: Pittsburgh/Baypoint BART Train at Walnut Creek Walnut Creek, residential city (1990 pop. 60,569), Contra Costa co., W Calif., in the San Francisco Bay area; inc. 1914. It is the trade and shipping center of an extensive agricultural area where walnuts are among the major product.

Synopsis of Incident:

Yesterday, in a joint operation with United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  Customs Officers and a narcotics detection canine, BART Police Train Team and U.S. Customs Officers performed several sweeps of BART trains. These sweeps were performed to detect any persons transporting narcotics throughout the Bay Area on BART trains. Three persons were discovered transporting small amounts of marijuana on Richmond, Hayward and San Leandro trains and were arrested earlier in the day. All three were issued citations and released. At 7:30 p.m., while sweeping a train bound for Pittsburgh/Bay Point in Walnut Creek, the narcotics detection canine alerted on suspect Mallon. He was discovered to be transporting thirteen bags of marijuana. Mallon was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility for Possession of Marijuana for Sales.

BART Police working with United States Customs will continue to conduct sweeps to assess the problem of narcotics being transported on BART trains.
