BART'S STAR RISES IN PARIS.

ALTHOUGH HEAVY winds may have blown through the French capital before the otherwise joyous eve of the new millennium, they didn't stop the Paris Opera Ballet The Paris Opéra Ballet is the official ballet company of the Opéra national de Paris, otherwise known as the Palais Garnier, though known more popularly simply as the Paris Opéra.  from celebrating the year 2000 in style. After a star-studded gala performance on New Year's Eve, it was time for Jean Guillaume Jean Guillaume (Fosse, 1918-2001) was a Belgian writer in Wallon. He investigated this language and he published in French Œuvres Poétique Wallonnes (Wallon Poetic Works) .  Bart to shine. , Bart was named Etoile, only the second male dancer in six years to enjoy such an honor.

"Naming principals is no longer a priority for the directors of the Paris Opera Ballet," Bart said. "It has truly become an honor to be named Etoile, for they are becoming more and more rare." The announcement was made privately following the curtain call, in the company of Bart's colleagues, and credited to Bart's readiness both technically and artistically.

As Bart accepted his nomination, he thanked his fellow dancers for their support, a highly unusual gesture of peer recognition from a Palais Garnier The Palais Garnier, also known as the Opéra de Paris or Opéra Garnier, but more commonly as the Paris Opéra, is a 2,200 seat opera house in Paris, France.  dancer. Fundamentally attached to the democratic distribution of roles, Bart sees a truly successful performance as one that results from an effort not unlike that among players on a winning soccer team.

Since 1996, Bart has been honing his skills as a choreographer, an interest he hopes to pursue after retiring from the spotlight. His dancemaking has attracted a dedicated following: Fellow principal Manuel Legris danced one of Bart's creations during a recent trip to Japan, and the Jeune Ballet de France recently performed his interpretation of Adam's Le Didble a Quatre.

"I enjoy choreography. I think it is my way of creating pieces I would have liked to dance myself," he said. "Somehow, it is also an homage to those who have inspired me along the way, like Robbins and Balanchine."

Bart will not fully assume his role as a principal until next season, but until then, he can be seen performing lead roles in such gala productions as Cinderella this spring and Raymonda in July. He will also make a guest appearance as Solor in La Bayadere ba·ya·dere
