BARRY TRADE TALKS ONGOING.Byline: Scott Wolf Daily News Staff Writer Brent Barry Barry, Welsh Barri, town (1991 pop. 45,053) and port, Vale of Glamorgan, S Wales, on the Bristol Channel. Once a major coal-exporting port, its more diversified export products include cement, flour, and steel products. The leading imports are bananas, oil, timber, grain, and sand. Barry also has large storage and ship-repair facilities. The town is a seaside resort especially noted for the beaches on Barry Island, which is linked to the mainland. is still a Clipper, but NBA teams remain interested in acquiring the shooting guard before Thursday's trade deadline. According to several sources, the Clippers discussed a three-way deal with the San Antonio Spurs and Philadelphia 76ers. The Clippers would have sent Barry to San Antonio, the Spurs would have sent center Will Perdue to the 76ers, who would then ship guard Jim Jackson to L.A. That deal fell apart Tuesday, however, when the 76ers traded Jackson and Clarence Weatherspoon to Golden State for Joe Smith and Brian Shaw. This doesn't mean Barry won't be moved by Thursday. San Antonio is still interested, and could offer Perdue straight up, since the Clippers desperately need a center. That trade could be a public relations nightmare, though, because few Clippers fans would be happy with a career backup center in exchange for Barry, perhaps the most popular player on the roster. Another possible snag: Perdue has expressed reservations about playing for the Clippers. The Clippers reportedly have also offered Barry to Vancouver for rookie point guard Antonio Daniels, but that deal appears unlikely because the Grizzlies would have little chance of re-signing Barry after the season. Barry, who becomes a free agent after this year, has already informed the Clippers he will not re-sign with the club. If they do not trade him by Thursday, they will risk losing Barry and receiving nothing in return. |
