BARRY NAMED WOMAN OF YEAR; WRIGHT HONORS SIMI WOMAN FOR SERVICE TO COMMUNITY.

Byline: Sylvia L. Oliande Daily News Staff Writer

A former school board president who has dedicated herself to the education of Simi Valley's children has been named by state Sen. Cathie Wright, R-Simi Valley, as the 19th District's Woman of the Year.

Judy Barry, 56, will be honored Monday in Sacramento for her dedication to children and her many years of community service. She will be joined by women from throughout the state who are also being given the distinction by their elected representatives.

``I thought, Why me?'' Barry said Thursday, describing her reaction to news of the award. ``There are so many other people in our community, and certainly in Senator Wright's district, that are deserving of this award as well. But I very humbly accepted.''

She added that her work is not about the recognition, but about the satisfaction she receives while doing it.

``It's wonderful to see positive things come out of what I've done,'' she said.
