 spokeswoman Lorie Taylor said.

Police were called to the Gladstone Street home about 11 a.m., after receiving a report of a man with a gun.

There were conflicting reports about what happened when officers arrived at the scene. Taylor said the man fired three rounds from an assault rifle at the officers. Other reports indicated he aimed a weapon at police, but did not fire.

Kanan later barricaded himself in a horse barn, and police heard several more shots.

About four hours later, Kanan shot a horse and dog to death inside the barn, then walked into the yard and shot himself in the head with a semiautomatic handgun, Taylor said.

He was pronounced dead at Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills.

Nunziato said George Kanan had a heart attack Saturday morning after learning of his sister's death.

"She was 80-some years old," Nunziato said. "She had some illnesses. It was natural causes."

"The family is pretty much in mourning," Nunziato said.
