Barrera, 54, of Sylmar has been president of the 7,000-student Sylmar college since 2000, and earns $149,475 a year. Her salary as senior vice chancellor will be $175,000.

``For me, it's an opportunity to work not just at Mission College, but with all nine colleges, and see them launch new efforts,'' Barrera said.

LACCD Chancellor Darroch ``Rocky'' Young, former president of Pierce College and, most recently, the former senior vice chancellor for the district, noted that he was on the selection committee that tapped Barrera for the Mission presidency and said they have worked well together over the past five years.

``I think she's a very ethical person with a high degree of integrity,'' Young said. ``She's honest, both in the way she interacts with others, and in her own self-assessment. I don't think she lets her ego get in the way of a solution.''

Young also praised Barrera's work in negotiating a three-way land deal with Los Angeles County and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that will nearly double the size of the campus, saying she has earned the respect of many other elected officials during the lengthy process.

If the deal isn't finalized by the end of the year, Mission could lose $13 million in state funding, but the district anticipates it will be completed in time.

Barrera said she believes she will take over her new duties before the end of the year, but intends to continue to lead the college through the land deal.
