BARON BACK IN FULL SWING FOR NEWHALL-SAUGUS.

Byline: Bryan Winchell Special to the Daily News

For Brian Baron baron

Title of nobility, ranking in modern times immediately below a viscount or a count (in countries without viscounts). The wife of a baron is a baroness. Originally, in the early Middle Ages, the term designated a tenant of whatever rank who held a tenure of barony
, timing is everything.

In a ``slump'' during the regular baseball season - Baron hit .405 after finishing second in the area in 1995 with an average over .500 - he broke out of it just in time.

He didn't stop there, though. As his team continued to charge its way through the loser's bracket, his bat got hotter. In the final two games Sunday Sunday: see Sabbath; week. , Baron collected six hits, including three hits and a double, as the team avenged a·venge

``That first loss definitely woke us up,'' Baron said. ``(Our comeback Comeback

For Baron, there really was no adjustment to correct his slump Slump

because he really wasn't doing anything wrong.

``He was still hitting the ball hard but right at people,'' manager Pat Eggleston said. ``I kept telling him that it would fall in one of these days and he came up this weekend and did a great job.''

For Baron the key was not to get too down while his luck was running on empty.

``I just had to say, `Hey, keep confident and don't get (upset),' '' Baron said. ``All you can do is hit the ball hard.''

And when the slump ended against Woodland Hills West, Baron was notably relieved.

``I was just like, `Oh, man it's finally done,' because I'd rather have a slump during the regular season than in the playoffs,'' Baron said.

There was one adjustment Baron made and that was to be more aggressive when facing curveballs. But really, it was just a matter of time before it all came back.

Baron hopes to continue his recent hot streak when the team opens play in the Area 6 playoffs tonight at 6 against Charter Cove at UCLA's Jackie Robinson Noun 1. Jackie Robinson - United States baseball player; first Black to play in the major leagues (1919-1972)

last year but errors led to three Camarillo runs and Newhall-Saugus was unable to work its way out of the loser's bracket.

Baron, a Hart High graduate, is one of 12 high school graduates on Newhall-Saugus, making it one of the older teams in the area. And he feels that age combined with the team's experience in the Area 6 playoffs last year might give them a slight advantage.

``I'm pretty confident,'' Baron said. ``We have a lot of experience playing together. I've been with some of these guys since PONY ball so we're accustomed to playing in a championship environment and we know how to handle it.''

But when this tournament is done, Baron's baseball career is still far from over. He will attend Northwestern next year, where he'll study psychology and health sciences, and is hoping to earn a starting spot in the Wildcats' outfield.

``The coach said I have a chance to start in the outfield,'' said Baron, who plays right and center field for Newhall-Saugus. ``It really doesn't matter to me where I play. They said they might even use me to catch some.''

When he leaves Sept. 9 for Northwestern, he'll be leaving the area he's called home all his life. But that doesn't worry him.

``I'm just excited to be going to a new environment and to meet new people,'' he said.
