BARNETT NAMES ROWAN DIRECTOR OF CORPORATE DEVELOPMENT

 JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Oct. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Barnett Banks, Inc. (NYSE: BBI) has named Helen Rowan as director of Corporate Development. She will focus on new opportunities for fee income, helping Barnett reach its goal of raising non-interest income from 25 percent to 30 percent of revenues.
 Rowan directed Barnett's Investor Relations and Financial Analysis from 1988 until her current appointment. She joined Barnett in 1984 as a loan review analyst and later worked in commercial lending for Barnett Bank of Southwest Florida before returning to Barnett Banks, Inc. to become manager of Investor Relations.
 Rowan, 32, holds a bachelor's degree from Cornell University in New York and a master's degree in business administration from Dartmouth College in New Hampshire.
 With $37 billion in assets and 632 offices in Florida and Georgia, Barnett is Florida's leading financial institution and the 19th largest in the United States. Its stock (BBI) is listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
