BARINGTON CAPITAL NAMES THREE SCIENTISTS TO NEWLY-FORMED TECHNOLOGY ADVISORY BOARD.


Group, L.P., an investment banking firm specializing in financing emerging growth companies, today announced the appointment of three experts to a newly formed Technology Advisory Board to increase the firm's capability in financing technology companies.

The board members include Dr. Edward E. David, Jr., a former Science Advisor to the President of the United States; Dr. George Bugliarello, Chancellor of Polytechnic University; and Dr. Terrence McGarty, formerly chief operating officer of NYNEX Mobile and a telecommunications expert.

"We anticipate that the Board will be a hands-on entity, and provide a major assist to technologically oriented companies coming to Barington Capital for financing," said James A. Mitarotonda, the firm's chairman and chief executive officer. "Being able to tap the unique capabilities and years of experience of these individuals helps make Barington Capital a major factor in providing growth capital to the technology sector."

Mr. Mitarotonda noted the immense demand for capital by technology companies, and also the rapid changes taking place across a broad spectrum of scientific endeavors. , Inc., an advisory firm on technology, research and innovation management, was Science Advisor to President Richard Nixon from 1970 to 1973. He also served as President of Exxon Research and Engineering Company, and Executive Director of Bell Telephone Laboratories. U.S. Representative to the NATO Science Committee, Dr. David holds a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from The Massachusetts Institute of Technology and has 13 honorary degrees from as many universities. Among his many awards: he has been inducted into the Georgia Institute of Technology Hall of Fame and was the recipient of the Arthur M. Bueche Award from the National Academy of Engineering. Dr. David's field of expertise includes computing, telecommunications, information technology, energy systems and materials. He is also a frequent advisor for technology management.

Dr. Bugliarello is an engineer and educator with a broad background ranging from computer languages to biomedical engineering and telecommunications. He was President of Polytechnic University from 1973 to 1994, and holds a Doctor of Science (Sc.D.) degree in engineering from The Massachusetts Institute of Technology as well as honorary degrees from Carnegie-Mellon University, among several other universities. He has been chairman of the board of Science and Technology for International Development of the National Academy of Sciences and is a past chairman of the National Science Foundation's Advisory Committee for Science and Engineering Education. Dr. Bugliarello has broad international experience as a consultant, and currently is the U.S. member of a Steering Group of the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO. During New York City Mayor Koch's administration, he was chairman of the Mayor's Commission on Science and Technology. He currently serves on the boards of several corporations and foundations.

Dr. McGarty, who received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering and computer science from M.I.T., has been a member of the faculty at the school, as well as holding executive positions with the Communications Satellite Corp., Warner Communications and NYNEX. He has been involved in the formation and/or turnarounds of approximately 12 corporations, including Telmarc Telecommunications, which he also served as chief executive officer. He is the author of four books and over 75 papers in such areas as telecommunications policy, medical economics, information systems, CATV and computer systems.
