The officers continued their surveillance as the group picked up Smith's half-sister, Kim Benton, and pulled into an alley behind The ClassRoom bar in Northridge. They reportedly went inside with guns drawn, came out with their loot and drove off.

It was Fields who fired at the detectives first, according to prosecution testimony.

Police returned the fire, killing Benton and Deffenbaugh and hitting Fields, who later died.
