attracted more than 8,000 visitors in December, Rabbi rabbi [Heb.,=my master; my teacher], the title of a Jewish spiritual leader. The role of the rabbi has undergone a number of transformations. In the Talmudic period, rabbis were primarily teachers and interpreters of the Torah.  Moshe Bryski knew it was going to be a good year for the Jewish faith in the Conejo Valley The Conejo Valley is a region spanning both Southeastern Ventura County and Northwest Los Angeles County in Southern California, United States. It was discovered in 1542 by Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, and eventually became part of the Rancho El Conejo land grant by  area.

To celebrate a year marked by growth and the imminent opening of the Conejo Jewish Academy Adult Education Institute, Chabad of the Conejo Valley will gather Sunday for a gala banquet featuring comedian Red Buttons Red Buttons (February 5 1919 – July 13 2006) was the stage name of American comedian and actor Aaron Chwatt. He won an Academy Award as Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Airman Joe Kelly in Sayonara (1957), a rare dramatic role. .

``It's been a wonderful year of growth for us in the Jewish community,'' said Bryski, executive director of Chabad. ``In Agoura Hills alone there are about 2,000 Jewish families.''

The institute, scheduled to open in four weeks at 30345 Canwood St., will offer Hebrew classes for youngsters, programs for teen-agers and adult education programs. Bryski expects several thousand people to make use of the 4,000-square-foot facility each year.

He said the timing is especially meaningful because 1996 marks the 18th year Chabad has been in the Conejo Valley.

``This is our chai. Chai means 18 in Hebrew, and 18 is an important number in the Jewish faith,'' Bryski explained. ``This is a very significant milestone for us.''

In addition to Buttons, a Sephardic choir will accompany singer Yitzhak Bitton. There also will be a performance by a children's choir, and awards will be given to several members of the community.

Bryski said honorees this year will be Gary and Susan Polson - for giving their time, money and energy to encourage growth in the Jewish community. In addition, Kim Moskowitz will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Its goal is to promote Jewish identity Jewish identity is the subjective state of perceiving oneself as as a Jew and as relating to being Jewish. Jewish identity, by this definition, does not depend on whether or not a person is regarded as a Jew by others, or by an external set of religious, or legal, or sociological  and awareness.

Bryski said more than 400 guests are expected to attend the event Sunday.
