It took a future Valley kid to beat the Valley's dominant City Section baseball team on Tuesday in the 4-A semifinals at Birmingham High.

Banning High School's Nick Garcia Nick Garcia (born April 9, 1979 in Plano, Texas) is an American soccer defender, who currently plays for the Kansas City Wizards of Major League Soccer.

As a senior at Bishop Lynch High School in Dallas, Texas, Garcia won the 1996-97 Gatorade National Boys Socccer Player of

Alvarado decided not to bring in ace Jon Garland in the sixth inning with the score tied at 6.

``If we're ahead, he would have closed the game,'' Alvarado said. ``But it didn't happen. I gambled and lost.''

Alvarado determined that he didn't just want to go to Dodger Stadium and lose. He wanted Garland available. But the Cougars (22-11) could never take a lead late in the game to clear the way for a Garland appearance. Their only lead was 3-2 in the third inning.

``We thought we were going to see him (Garland),'' Garcia said. ``But we figured if we got a few runs before he came in, we could shut them down.''

But more than missing Garland, it was Banning's impressive hitting attack that eliminated the Cougars. In the third inning, with the Pilots trailing 3-2, they started hitting Ken Griffey Jr.-like home runs. First Miguel Gallardo drilled a home run over the center-field fence. Then Frank Perez homered over the left-field fence. After a pop-out, Vince Velazquez hit another home run to left field, sending pitcher Wes Crown to the bench. These weren't little fly balls - they were bashed high and far.

``Yesterday, we had a little home-run derby, seniors vs. the underclassmen,'' Garcia said. ``I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

Jack Cassel, usually Kennedy's closer, did well in relief. He came on in the third inning and held the Pilots to two hits until the sixth. Michael Cockrell singled with one out, stole second, went to third on a bunt and scored on a wild pickoff pick·off

Banning had lost to Kennedy in the 4-A playoffs each of the past two years. ``I just wanted to finish my career with a win over them,'' Garcia said.
