LIAM McHale sees his new coaching role with Clare as another string to his bow as he eyes the Mayo senior manager's job down the line.

"I've always said that I want to manageMayo some day and this is a stepping stone in that direction," said McHale. "I'm really looking forward to this new challenge in Clare.

"I really enjoyed working in a coaching capacity with Kevin McStay and the Mayo under-21s, and with John Maughan and the Mayo seniors. This will be a great opportunity for me.

"They have realistic ambitions; they want to get out of Division Four and be competitive in the Championship," he told the Mayo News.

McHale is following in the footsteps of Maughan, who took up his first managerial role with the Banner in the early 90s and led them to a historic Munster title in 1992.

He added that he is keen to continue as manager of club side Ballina despite accepting the role in Clare.

"I've spoken to some of the club officials, but they'll have to meet now, discuss the situation, and see if it's possible for me to do both jobs."
