The March of Dimes
For the Canadian charitable organization, see Ontario March of Dimes and March of Dimes Canada.
March of Dimes is the name of a United States health charity, whose mission is to improve the health of babies.
 Real Estate Industry Man of the Year, Lynn Effinger, was born without a left hand, but it hasn't stopped him from putting his heart into all he does.

The vice president at Washington Mutual Bank in Chatsworth has displayed a special tenacity in a variety of endeavors throughout his life.

He played Little League baseball as a kid. In his teen years it was football, where he gained a starting position on three different gridiron teams as a fullback at Wilson High School There are numerous Wilson High Schools in the United States, most named after the United States President Woodrow Wilson, including:

He was named the Most Inspirational Player and Most Courageous Football Player of the Decade by his teammates and coaches of the California Football League champions in 1974.

The champion and businessman has previously served as director of market research and as advertising director for Shapell Industries Incorporated and director of advertising and public relations for Great Western Real Estate.

He is also a past fund-raiser for the March of Dimes.

A salute is the order of the day for two young patriots, Matthew Conrad and Steven Aune from the Reserve Officer Training Corps at El Camino Real High School El Camino Real High School (also known locally as "ECR" and by some more recently as "ELCO") is a public secondary school located in the Woodland Hills district of the San Fernando Valley region of the city of Los Angeles, California. .

The pair attended the Youth Leadership Conference at Camp Pendleton sponsored by the J.H. Pendleton Chapter of the Military Order of the World Wars.

``It showed me how to be a more effective leader, I learned to ask for advice and how to use the information to get a job done more effectively,'' Aune said.

The 17-year-old wants to be a Navy airport firefighter and is currently in the delayed entry program A program under which an individual may enlist in a Reserve Component of a military service and specify a future reporting date for entry on active duty in the Active Component that would coincide with availability of training spaces and with personal plans such as high school graduation.  with the United States Navy United States Navy

``I come from a military family; they are very patriotic,'' Aune said.

Matthew Conrad, now in his third year of the program, loves his country. ``It taught me a lot about the military and how important it is to America, it helps us have what we have,'' he said. The conference impressed the young cadet. ``It showed me how much people have sacrificed for my country and that I should give back and do the same for the next generation,'' he said.

Guest speakers during their five day stay included past prisoners of war prisoners of war, in international law, persons captured by a belligerent while fighting in the military. International law includes rules on the treatment of prisoners of war but extends protection only to combatants.  from World War II, Korea and Vietnam, ``It was a little hard to hear about what they went through,'' Aune said. ``But it didn't discourage me, I still want to be in the Navy,'' he said.

    The scholarship recipients also include Marina Balabanova and Yaron Glazer of Tarzana, David Halmos of Calabasas and Leslie Reich of Encino.

    Elana Taylor, Leonid Barkhash, Kevin Skyler and Benjamin Taylor of Sherman Oaks also received scholarships.

    Others include Marina Goldovsky of West Hills, Olga Krimon of Glendale, Scott Sweet of Valley Village, Darin Martel of Burbank and Emily Weisberg of Woodland Hills.

    The amounts of the awards vary in relationship to student needs and qualifications.
