Beirut: Greater eco-nomic co-operation is crucial for Arabs to gain more leverage on the global economy, His Royal Highness the Prime Minister said yesterday.

Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa underlined the role of Arab banks in engineering development and spurring investment.

 the Premier's remarks came in a speech at a ceremony in Beirut, Lebanon, where he became the first Arab to receive the 2009 Leadership Vision award for Arab and International Banking Work.

The Arab Union of Banks honoured him with the prize in acknowledgement of his role in promoting Bahrain as regional and international banking player.

It was also in recognition of HRH the Premier's lifetime achievement and efforts to build a viable economic and financial model in Bahrain.

The speech was delivered on his behalf by Central Bank of Bahrain The Central Bank of Bahrain was established in 1973 as the Bahrain Monetary Agency, shortly after Bahrain gained its independence from the United Kingdom. As per Decree No.  Governor Rasheed Al Maraj, who received the Golden Shield from Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri and AUB chairman Adnan Ahmed Yusif.

Leading Arab and international political and economic figures attended the grand ceremony.

 of the global crisis," HRH the Premier said.

Prime Minister Hariri praised HRH Prince Khalifa for pioneering a model for long-term, high-level achievements, reflecting the wide potential of Arab resourcefulness and expertise. A short documentary highlighting HRH the Premier's life and achievements was also shown.
