BANKER'S COMMUNITY SERVICE HONORED : FERNANDO AWARD WINNER PRAISED AS `DYNAMO'.

Nancy L. Schmidt, the 1996 Fernando Award recipient, was honored Thursday night by Valley movers and shakers Shakers, popular name for members of the United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing, also called the Millennial Church. Members of the movement, who received their name from the trembling produced by religious emotion, were also known as Alethians.  who praised her for a lifetime of community service.

About 150 people attended the black-tie reception and dinner at the Sheraton Universal, where they recognized Schmidt, vice president and manager of American Pacific State Bank, for her activity in community groups.

``Nancy is just a dynamo,'' said David W. Fleming, a past Fernando Award recipient and former president of the 38-year-old organization. ``We try to emulate a lot of her work. She well deserves this award.''

A former schoolteacher, Schmidt founded the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

The now decommissioned hospital, which is at 12699 Riverside Drive in the North Hollywood neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, is the location , the San Fernando Valley Economic Alliance and the Valley Industry Commerce Association.

``It's self-energizing,'' Schmidt said of volunteering. ``All the good that people get out of it brings me so much joy.''

The Fernando Award is bestowed for strength, courage, dedication and leadership.

``It's the highest award a volunteer can receive in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, ,'' Fleming said. ``You not only have to be an outstanding volunteer but go above and beyond the call of duty.''

Schmidt was active in the Northridge Earthquake The Northridge earthquake occurred on January 17, 1994 at 4:31 AM Pacific Standard Time in the city of Los Angeles, California. The earthquake had a "strong" moment magnitude of 6.  recovery effort, and she was appointed by then-Los Angeles City Angeles City (Tagalog: Lungsod ng Angeles; Kapampangan: Ciudad ning Angeles), geographically located within the province of Pampanga in the Philippines, is locally classified as a first-class, highly urbanized city.  Councilman Zev Yaroslavsky Zev Yaroslavsky (born December 21, 1948) is a Los Angeles County politician. He served on the Los Angeles City Council from 1975 until 1994, when he was elected to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. He was preceded in both offices by Edmund D. Edelman.  to chair the Community Redevelopment Agency Earthquake Recovery Advisory Committee for Sherman Oaks/Studio City.

Schmidt lives in Chatsworth with her daughter, Kristin.
