BANK SOUTH ENTERS DOUGLAS COUNTY; PURCHASES BRANCH OF SOUTHERN FEDERAL SAVINGS ASSOCIATION OF GEORGIA

ATLANTA, April 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Bank South (NASDAQ: BKSO) announced today the purchase of the Lithia Springs branch of the Southern Federal Savings Association of Georgia. This purchase was made from the Resolution Trust Corporation.
This transaction will provide an entrance into Douglas County for Bank South, which recently also entered Fayette County for the first time, and has announced plans to expand into Hall County through the purchase of The Citizens Bank of Gainesville.
In 1990, the population of Douglas County was 24,200, and is expected to grow to 80,800 by 1998. Average median household income is $40,330.
The Southern Federal branch purchase closed today, and conversion of all insured customer accounts will take place this weekend. On Monday, April 25, the office will open as the Bank South Lithia Springs office.
"We are excited about this opportunity to expand our franchise into Douglas County," said Patrick L. Flinn, Chairman and CEO of Bank South. "We already have more than 3,000 customers who live in Douglas County, and having a presence there will allow us to serve them more conveniently, and to bring our unique brand of convenient service into a growing new marketplace."
As of Feb. 28, Southern Federal's Lithia Springs branch had $10.5 million in deposits and about 1,000 accounts. This office is located at 3175 East Bankhead Highway.
Recently, Bank South announced plans to extend full-service banking hours at its 38 InStore locations in metro Atlanta. Beginning May 1, metro Atlanta InStore offices will remain open until 9 p.m., seven days a week, compared to the current closing time of 8 p.m. Also, InStore offices will open at 9 a.m., Monday through Saturday, compared to 10 a.m. presently. Additionally, drive-through windows in traditional offices located in metro Atlanta will open at 7 a.m., Monday through Friday, beginning in May. These extended hours will allow Bank South customers to have direct access to the bank on their way to work in the morning and later in the evenings.
Bank South also announced a new promotion which will allow customers to save 5 percent on their groceries at Kroger and other participating retailers when purchased with a Bank South Check Card. This promotion will begin May 1 in participating markets throughout Georgia.
Bank South is a $6.0 billion-asset holding company with 143 offices throughout Georgia.
