A group spokesman said the integration of A&L into Santander was proceeding, including axing 1,900 jobs from the three UK divisions in the coming year.

Today's figures show an "excellent" full year in "unprecedented markets" for the UK arm, including the fourth quarter of Bradford & Bingley.

Pre-tax profits were up more than 20% to pounds 991m and nearly pounds 14bn of additional net lending in mortgages and small firms was reported.

Today's update said: "We have been a consistent mortgage lender throughout the year by continuing to offer a full range of competitive deals.

"While others have withdrawn from the market, we have remained open for business.

"We have increased lending to UK small businesses reflecting our desire to grow in this market."

The UK arm now has 20 new corporate banking centres linked to the A&L acquisition, including one of its first in Liverpool.
