BANK JOKE LANDS MAN BEHIND BARS.

Byline: Alicia Doyle Daily News Staff Writer

Anthony Cardona said he was just joking when he screamed ``this is a stickup!'' while standing in line at an Oxnard bank Wednesday, but the joke was on him.

Cardona, 23, was arrested at gunpoint Wednesday afternoon when police responded to the prank he pulled at Bank of America

, then suddenly threw his hands over his head and yelled, ``This is a stickup!''

He then chuckled and left the building, according to police.

Cardona had apparently forgotten his identification or checkbook in his car, and returned a short time later to complete his transaction. By that time, a bank employee had already hit the silent alarm, Neese said.

Oxnard police Officer Tom Chronister said that Cardona claimed to have been ``only singing a song'' and was misunderstood.

``He was just trying to play it off as though everyone else was wrong,'' Chronister said. ``But he said it so loud that all the tellers could hear him and all the customers could hear him.''

Neese said she didn't hear Cardona make the remark because she was on the phone at the time. But once she got word of his comment, she stood next to the teller who would be dealing with the man face to face.

``He didn't even discuss it, as though it never happened,'' Neese said. She added that the teller who helped Cardona was calm because she had no knowledge of what he had just done.

Once his business was finished, Cardona left the bank and was met by police waiting outside the entrance. At gunpoint, Cardona was ordered to lay on the ground where he was handcuffed.

By this time, officers had determined Cardona was unarmed and that he was only joking.

Neese, who has been in the banking business since 1968, said she has seen her fair share of real holdups.

``But I have never seen somebody be foolish enough to do something like this,'' she said. ``I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)
