BANGED-UP VALENCIA PUTS MORE OF THE HURT ON BURROUGHS : VALENCIA 27 BURROUGHS 22.

Byline: Brian Dalziel Daily News Staff Writer

What injuries? That's what Valencia High's football squad is asking itself after opening the Foothill League on Friday night with a 27-22 victory over Burroughs at Canyon High.

Through the first six weeks of the season, the injury bug has bit many of Valencia's key players. But the way the Vikings are performing on the field, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

``There really isn't a panic with the players anymore,'' said Valencia coach Brian Stiman, whose team improved to 4-2 overall and has won two straight.

``Injuries are happening so often that we're immune to it; we're numb numb (num) anesthetic (1).

The Vikings' blitz-laiden defense certainly left Burroughs' quarterback Joe Kroells numb Friday night.

``We played the pass pretty well,'' Stiman said. ``The defense had a marvelous game. Our game plan was not to let him (Kroells) throw the ball.

``With their quarterback and receivers, you have to do that (blitz blitz

Even though the defense played tough, Valencia still had to hold off a furious final-quarter rally by Burroughs.

The Indians (3-3) fought back from a 27-10 deficit with two touchdowns - the final one coming on a Brian Criscuolo 14-yard catch with 1:03 left.

But Ray Cassaday, who was probable entering Friday's game because of a pulled hamstring hamstring /ham·string/ (ham´string) one of the tendons bounding the popliteal space laterally and medially.

, recovered the on-side kick and the Vikings took two plays to run out the clock.

``We had a great performance by some kids whohave stepped in this season,'' Stiman said. ``Despite all the injuries, the kids keep playing. When all the newspapers were counting us out, the kids manage to fight back.

``This was a big game for us to win in terms of building our confidence.''

White said after the game he felt fine and that he should be ready for next week's game.

``It's just swollen,'' said White, who has also been nursing a sore right ankle for most of the season. ``I just need some rest. Valencia extended its 14-10 halftime lead by scoring on its first two possessions of the second half. Cassaday scored on a 6-yard touchdown and later from 3-yards out 33 seconds into the fourth.
