Special events held to benefit youths in the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

More than 200 customized cars were entered in the competition on the athletic fields of the high school. Dozens of spruced-up bicycles were also on display.

Chris Richards, president of the athletic club, said he hopes the event promotes peace among Latino and African-American gangs, especially in areas such as Hubert Humphrey Park in Pacoima where shootings between rival gangs have caused city officials to close the park at dusk.

``There have been big-time tensions between the blacks and Hispanics for four or five months now,'' Richards said as he looked at the Latino and African-American crowd co-mingling without problems Sunday. ``We need more communication. The more of that we have, the better. This is a start.''
