Here's the scene. Cheri, an accounting manager for Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  Medical Supplies in Oxnard, woke up her longtime friend Warren Pitassi at 1:30 a.m. Saturday with the two little words guaranteed to strike fear and panic into all soon-to-be fathers. ``It's time It's Time was a successful political campaign run by the Australian Labor Party (ALP) under Gough Whitlam at the 1972 election in Australia. Prepared and well trained, Warren, half asleep, commenced with the drill - bumping into walls and tripping over Tripping Over is a British/Australian six-part drama series. He ran downstairs to the garage, then pulled Cheri's car around to the front of their second-story condo - leaving it idling as he ran upstairs to help Cheri down to the car.

Inside the car were Cheri's purse, camera, diaper bag and some clothes.

``As we started down the stairs, this guy jumped into my car and took off,'' Cheri said Wednesday, sounding pretty tired from being up all night with her new baby, Christopher Gage Pitassi, born at 9:58 a.m. Saturday.

``I was so shocked that all I could say was, `Warren, that guy's stealing my car,' '' Cheri said.

Warren couldn't believe it, either. He was faced with a major dilemma.

His anger was telling him to chase down the guy in his truck - and give him a good thrashing.

His heart, though, was telling him: ``You don't leave the woman you love - the mother of your child - alone at 1:30 a.m. on a stairway, having contractions, to go chase some bum who stole a piece of metal.''

Cheri and Warren walked back into their condo and called 911. A California Highway Patrol cruiser showed up within five minutes to take the stolen-car report.

During that time, Cheri had that sick feeling which comes with realizing a thief has the keys to your house, all your credit cards and information on your identity.

``Warren called up his brother to come over and watch the place, in case the guy came back while we were at the hospital,'' Cheri said.

With nothing to do but practice her breathing exercises for 10 minutes, until Warren's brother arrived, Cheri began telephoning her credit-card companies. Between contractions, now coming about every four minutes, she was canceling her credit cards.

Now, that's one tough woman.

Cheri was just about done when Warren's brother showed up, and her water burst, she said.

``We finally got on the road to the hospital at 2:30 a.m. in Warren's construction truck,'' Cheri said.

The news Wednesday from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is a world-renowned hospital located in Los Angeles, California. History

is good. The operation to remove a kidney from Stevi Bennett and transplant it to her husband, Joel, went smoothly, said Julie Blair, daughter of this loving Sherman Oaks couple I wrote about on Father's Day.

``It's been a long 12 years, and now it's coming to a conclusion,`` Julie said Wednesday from the hospital waiting room, where the whole family was still gathered.

``We're all so happy and relieved. The doctors said everything went wonderfully, and that the kidney is functioning great. Both Mom and Dad should be up and around by Friday.

``She wants a cheese pizza, and he wants to get out and play baseball with his granddaughter,'' Julie laughed.

Laughter. That's the best gift this close-knit family could have received.

It has been a long, hard 12 years for them - years in which Joel adamantly refused to accept his wife's offer to donate one of her kidneys to replace his failed kidneys.

He chose instead to undergo 12 years of dialysis - the last four waiting and praying for a donor kidney that never came.

And, finally, just last month, Stevi told Joel, who was in increasing pain, that enough was enough. She was giving him one of her kidneys - and that was that.
