BAND-AID DRIVE FOR SICK KIDS SCHOOL HELPS CANCER PATIENTS COLLECT COLORFUL DONATIONS.

 Vista School have collected 547 boxes of colorful children's Band-Aids as part of a campaign by two young cancer patients to make fellow patients' lives brighter.

Rancho Vista students since November have been collecting the Band-Aid boxes, which will be donated to Childrens Hospital Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. , where patients 13-year-old Spencer Brandt and 8-year-old Joshua Ludicke became friends.

,'' said Jennifer Owen, a third-grade teacher and student council adviser. ``It opened our eyes and our hearts.''

Since November, Spencer's and Joshua's efforts have resulted in the collection of 4,172 Band-Aid boxes that came from schools, businesses, Lancaster city workers, Sheriff's Department employees, hospitals, community groups and churches.

``We have a lot more to come. It really makes a big difference,'' said Spencer's mother, Liz Brandt.

Spencer came up with the idea last year after seeing a young fellow patient stop screaming from the painful removal of an IV after a Power Ranger Band-Aid was put on him.

The boys had both attended Grace Lutheran School Lutheran schools and education were a priority for Lutherans who emigrated to the United States and Australia from Germany and Scandinavia. One of the first things they did was to create schools for their children.  in Lancaster and became friends in the hospital.

Originally diagnosed in 1999 with leukemia leukemia (lkē`mēə), cancerous disorder of the blood-forming tissues (bone marrow, lymphatics, liver, spleen) characterized by excessive production of immature or mature , Spencer was in remission for 14 months before relapsing in March. Liz Brandt said her son is in remission again but is continuing chemotherapy treatments and is being home-schooled.

The condition was diagnosed after Joshua began complaining in May that his stomach hurt. After five rounds of chemotherapy, he is in remission and back to school at Grace Lutheran.
